Isn't Chenoweth already 40? How old are these sorcery "students" supposed to be? And on a 35' screen... oy...
While I prefer Amy Adams to most others, I would really love to see what someone like Kristen Bell could bring to the project. We've seen her as lovably jaded (Veronica Mars), innocent and perky (Reefer Madness), and just badass (Heroes and "Mary Sunshine" from RM). Even though I think Mary Sunshine and Glinda have some of the same goody-goody perkiness, I really think Kristen could make this role something totally different from what we've seen, or would even expect. Plus we know she can sing. While I've enjoyed Amy Adams for some time now (I've liked her since she was on an episode of Buffy forever ago), we've already seen her as a singing princess-type. And while it's true that a princess and a witch are world apart, I just think that's how she'd play it. Whereas I can't even begin to wrap my mind around the idea of Bell as Glinda.
Oh, and I don't know why but I've always seen James Marsden in my head as Fiyero. Even when listening to the OBC. But I doubt he'll get it since it seems to be a trend to (with the exception of Kidman) not do repeat musicals. Lately all the big Hollywood musicals have these people we never knew could sing in them. And after successfully convincing us of their ability to act AND sing (the occasional Brosnan notwithstanding), they don't seem to do any more musicals after that.
Just my thoughts.
my casting ideas (with backing where need be)
Beyonce as Elphaba- based on her performance in dreamgirls I think she can pull it off, and hell she'll get asses in seats
Kristen Bell as Glinda
James Marsden as Fiyero
Michael Caine as the Wizard
Bette Midler as Madame Morrible
Jake Gyllenhaal as Boq
Brittany Snow as Nessarose
Alan Rickman as Dr. Dillamond

I'm not sure if Amy Adams has the chops for Galinda. I'd have to hear her sing higher notes than in Enchanted.
I'd love Kristen Bell as Galinda!
The Wizard shouldn't be played by a British actor, he's American...so getting a well known actor for the part is a no-brainer.
what about Iwan Mcgregor as Fiyero, and Carol Channing as Madame Morrible (she's the best by far).
I'm sorry, ANNA HATHAWAY for elphaba? really? and amy adams? I dont think she can vocally pull it off.
I think they really need people that can sing. This is a musical after all...

What about Brittany Murphy for Elphaba? She can sing and pull off being a social reject.
Ann Hathaway can sing, so I honestly think she would be great.
Elijah Wood as Boq
The Divine Miss M as Morrible.
I can see Anne Hathaway pulling off As Long As You're Mine, but not Defying Gravity or No Good Deed, and though I can more easily envision her Wizard and I, the ending is no where near as powerful as it usually is. I do think she'd be a great actress for the role though.
I guess I should change my expectations about what a movie adaptation would sound like. I'm sure whoever they pick will sing fine enough, but I'd be disappointed without that strong belt. I consider it practically a part of Elphaba's character because she speaks out against the Wizard and injustice. The voice takes on extra significance for me in this case. Does that make sense?
But I'm open to being pleasantly surprised by her or whomever ultimately plays the role.(I hope that doesn't sound self-important, I'm just sharing my thoughts.) =)
I enjoy Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson and as others have said, I could see them in the film! I would have never thought of Jake Gyllenhaal but I like it too. Man, if only Viggo Mortensen better fit one of the characters. He has a good voice. Does it matter if the actor who plays the Wizard isn't American if he can do the accent?

Adams would be my first choice as Galinda but can hathaway (vocaly) to on that big of a role? I know she's a good singer but I think they would have to have some dubbing for her. What about Streep as Morrible?

Anne Hathaway's a soprano. She'd be more suited for Galinda.
ELPHABA- An unknown
GLINDA-An unknown
FIEYRO-
THE WIZARD- Robin Williams
MADAME MORRIBLE- Carol Burnett or Kathy Bates
BOQ- Jake T austin
NESSAROSE- Miranda Cosgrove
They're trying to get the OBC but I think Patti would make a great Morrible. It kind of reminds me of Candide.
mygfdontliveincanada: I think that pattern exists because The Producers and Rent had cast relatively unknown people to the general public (well, okay, Will Ferrell, Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman, and Matt Broderick aren't really unknowns). Hairspray and Mamma Mia, on the other hand, put star vehicles in some of the major roles.
The other problem with the Producers was that the direction was horrible and it was exactly like the stage version.
Kristen Bell as Glinda YES
James Marsden as Fiyero YES
Michael Caine as the Wizard MAYBE
Bette Midler as Madame Morrible YES
Jake Gyllenhaal as Boq NOPE
Brittany Snow as Nessarose MAYBE AMY ADAMS
Alan Rickman as Dr. Dillamond YES
And I figure Anne Hathaway COULD work as Elphaba.
Don't laugh, I can also see Justin T. as Fiyero. SNL is showing him to be a skilled comedian, and he CAN sing (well, in a way.) Would get butts in seats too.
(List paraphrasing Jonart)
Leigh Ann Larkin as Glinda. If only she was a Hollywood star
If they want to treat the material with respect then they should cast actresses who can belt. Anne Hathaway's singing just wouldn't work but I could see her in green and acting the part great. I just think maybe they should cast Glinda and Elphaba as unknowns.
I'm not hugely opinionated on the cast for a Wicked movie, as long as the movie comes at the right time and is good. I would like to see Idina Menzel or Kerry Ellis, honestly. I disagree with a lot of people who say Idina would look too old for the part. But I'm not going to freak out when the casting comes out, as long as the end result is amazing.

Why don't they find the best and/or most famous actors for the parts and then dub their singing with superstar singers? That would doubly get butts in seats, and Wicked can afford it.
For example (these are just examples):
Elphaba- Jennifer Aniston/Celine Dion
Glinda- Scarlett Johannsen/ Mariah Carey
Fiyero- Jake Gyllenhaal/ Josh Groban
Nessa- Natalie Portman/ Christina Aguilera

I have said it before and I will say it again. I really don't want this movie to be made. I am one of the biggest Wicked fans I just don't see how they can translate this show to the screen without it falling flat. The magic is in the staging and the allure of being in the theatre. I just cringe thinking of a CGI Elphie belting defying gravity. Some shows lend themselves to film (e.g. Chicago and Hairspray). And some shows do not (Rent and The Producers). Theatre and film are completely different mediums. If they do this - and they are - I hope they hire a director who understands making a musical into a movie requires a lot of imagination. i.e. Adam Shankman vs. Chris Columbus
The only reason to make this into a movie is to explore faucets of the work that were not possible on the stage. I really hope they aren't just doing this to make money. I fear they are.

Carmen Cusack was Christine in The Phantom and played Elphaba, I think Anne would be fine.
I think Hathaway would be fine. Remember, we're not talking about her singing Defying Gravity eight times a week, she needs to get it right once in a studio. I like some of the other names suggested: Amy Adams as Glinda, Justin Timberlake as Fiyero, Bette Midler or Kathy Bates as Morrible.
