'Wicked' star turned sour? No longer a golden girl...

(Now. This thread has nothing to do with Wicked in any way EXCLUDING the fact that it concerns one of its current performers OFF STAGE. if this thread turns into something elphaba related, i renounce my broadway religion! i love the show, just not all the time)

I was just on broadway.com (coughrivalsitecough) where I happened to read the Q & A interview with Rue McClanahan. The interview is fine and there are one or two random and indirect questions on her opinions of the show and Morrible, but the conclusion of the interview is what intrigues me.

The interviewer draws a harmless connection between Rue and her ex fellow golden gal Bea Arthur. When asked what Bea's thoughts on Rue's first appearance on broadway are (with Bea being, as we know, a type of broadway-darling), Rue claims that Bea has not even acknowledged her performance at all. Rue promptly follows this up by clearly stating that she would never take any advice Bea may give her anyway and that she "doesn't need it"!

Now, this struck me as a tad sour.

Is there a long running feud between Rue and Bea that i know nothing of? Or maybe i'm reading too much into it?

It's common knowledge that - like the Sex and the City girls - the Golden Girls' actresses didn't get along too famously on set. I for one, don't really blame Rue for getting quite annoyed, she has been in the business for years, and started her career in theatre. Why would she need Bea Arthur's acknowledgment or advice? She doesn't.

For someone who's been in the business as along as Rue has, it was kind of a stupid question the interviewer asked her.

It's pretty much a given that not all actors get along when they work together. You don't have to be best friends with your co-stars, but just professional. But I must admit that after SATC ended, I was rather surprised that Kim and Sarah didn't get along that well.

How is she a bitch?

I suggest everyone reads her playbill.com interview, it was a much BETTER interview.

I just find it funny people are calling her a bitch by reading her words, you can't even hear her tone of voice.

People are going to think what they want. If a woman has a strong voice and speaks her mind she is unfortunately characterized as a bitch.

edit: and the playbill interview is a better interview.

Rue is one of the least bitchy people I've ever met.

She's a doll, and doesn't need to prove her talent to anyone.

re: 'Wicked' star turned sour? No longer a golden girl...

so it was the poor quality of the interview that made her come across like that?

i'm still confused. but i do agree that she doesn't need any advice from Bea persay, however, it was nothing more then an attempt by the interviewer to bring a touch of familiarised nostalgia to the interview (ala golden girls). that's what rue's most famous for anyway. Bea was a mere common link between broadway and the series

PJ, take heart! If you Google "Sarah Jessica Parker Kim Cattrall Feud", apparently it was resolved this past April on SJP's 40th birthday, where Kim was invited and they called a truce! (Even if it was just for the good PR, I choose to stay in this bubble, okay?)

And on topic, I didn't get the impression that Bea said that in a bitchy way, more with the intent of being sassy.

From what I gather Betty White and Bea Arthur famously didn't get along. I also recall that Rue, Betty and Estelle where upset at Bea's decision to leave the show.

As to the Rue vs Bea argument. I don't know. For all I know Rue could've been joking. They worked on two hugely successful shows together ("Maude" and "The Golden Girls") and thus have known each other professionally and personally for a minimum of 30 years.

For all we know that might show their love by fighting. Heck I know so many people like that and since both are obviously Type-A personalities it wouldn't suprise me either.

The SATC feud was primarily between SJP and Catrall, but it at some points became Nixon, Davis, and SJP vs Catrall..

From what has leaked out, basically Catrall didnt like that SJP got more money and more screen time then her. Well SJP was the star, as much of an ensemble show as it was...

The Golden Girls feud is also legendary, and it was primarily Betty White vs Bea Arthur, but I guess there was ill will all around.

Such ill will that for the recent reunion, Bea Arthur refused to be photographed with the others for the publicity shots. She was shot on her own and then photoshopped in.

popcultureboy- Is that true? I always just thought it was a schedule thing. Like they couldnt get the time to do the show together. If it is true. thats completely unprofessional.

Also, I think the interview was amateurish. Rue's been in the business for years. Just because Bea had her own show doesn't mean she should be giving out advice.

i see, so perhaps it is an ongoing feud?

or, 'creative differences' as many seem to call arguments in performing arts these days
