Will Pretty Woman go international?

So I am standing outside the Nederlander. I saw the poster and the list of producers. I noticed that one of them was Stage Entertainment.

I know that the shows they produce on Broadway tend to go to various spots in Europe. Latest example is Anastasia which is playing in Spain and Germany.

That said, if that ends up being the case with Pretty Woman, how successful would be it be overseas? just curiously asking.

Is the movie as well-known internationally? I think that would determine whether they go overseas or not.

In the beginning with them, here, it was them bringing shows into NY. Sister Act and Rocky: The Musical was theirs. They are also behind The Tina Turner musical in London.

And give other countries more of a reason to hate us?

I hope not!

It’ll at least tour the UK if there isn’t a West End production because, for some reason, we seem to have all the Broadway flops coming over for a touring production.

True. But, if memory serves I believed that both the Broadway and London productions of Sister Act were billed as Stage Entertainment and Whoopi Goldberg present Sister Act. It did then go on to play throughout Europe. Both a German and Italian production followed.

If it continues to do well here, there could be an appetite for it overseas (like another Jerry Mitchell show, KINKY BOOTS).

But don't compare this to Stage Entertainment's involvement in SISTER ACT and ROCKY and ANASTASIA: they were the lead producers on those shows; on PW, they're the 13th of 15 co-producers listed. (The 14th is Ambassador Theatre Group, which could mean something for a London mounting of PW.)

Islander, I think they wanted Goldberg's name to bring it here.

I guess my point was that they already have original productions abroad. Those two came here. My thought was to get their footing here on Broadway to produce shows that they can take abroad. I don't think they were original producers of a lot of Broadway shows that they are producimg abroad.

They also produced Big Fish but I don't think they took that overseas. So it seems that Pretty Woman and Anastasia are their first few. I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure there was a limited-run Japanese production of Big Fish, for what it's worth.

Big Fish did do a small West End run, but I guess, it wasn't successful.

I do remember hearing something about it possibly being done elsewhere but didn't follow it.

I think it did alright but there wasn't any major buzz about it.

I can certainly see Pretty Woman appealing for the tourist audience in London though.
