re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

Slim pickings.

I liked Marissa very much, but saw nothing special in her performance - it seemed very run of the mill, and she didn't do anything better or different than anyone else who I've seen play Tracy.

I didn't see AMOUR, but don't care for Errico's acting in general.

I disliked Mastrantonio in LA MANCHA.

Parkinson was remarkable in MOVIN' OUT, but still - no one comes close to Bernadette's brilliance in the role.

If Bernadette were not nominated, I would have given the award to Parkinson over Winokur.

And do'nt even get me started on Dick Latessa.

No. His performance was incredibly standard and run of the mill. He won because he was old, had an impressive career, and was in the "it" show. His performance was absolutely nothing special. The only thing he had going for him, in my eyes, was that he was in the original cast of FOLLIES.

Who was nominated with him?

Michael Cavenaugh, MOVIN' OUT
John Selya, MOVIN' OUT

who else?

Dick Latessa, HAIRSPRAY
Michael Cavanaugh, MOVIN OUT

Keith Roberts, MOVIN OUT
John Dossett, GYPSY

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

Again, slim pickings.

I was very passionate about Cavanaugh in MOVIN' OUT.

Wasn't any more passionate about Corey Reynolds than I was about Latessa.

I don't even remember anyone in MOVIN' OUT named Keith Roberts...

I would have given the award to John Dossett, hands down.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

I checked out the nominees from that year before I weighed in. Essentially, it was a 2-person competition that year -- Bernadette and Marissa. It's between an incredible role that was improperly cast and a perfectly cast / acted role that wasn't as challenging. I still think it's a difficult choice, but Bernadette should have won by a hair (or hairdo). But, as I've mentioned in other threads, it's all about the buzz and Hairspray / Marissa had all the good buzz and Bernadette had a lot of bad buzz. Hence the Tony choice.

John Dossett was completely lackluster and snoozeworthy as Herbie. Anyone who thought he was good never saw Jonathan Hadary.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

I would pick Michael Cavanaugh to win probably if I saw MOVIN OUT (havent seen it yet...i know i know). But of who I saw, I hated John Dossett in GYPSY. I dont know why really, I just thought HE was very run of the mill giving the usual Herbie performance with nothing new thrown in. I liked Corey Reynolds in HAIRSPRAY (as well as Latessa). But I think I'd chose Latessa over Reynolds. His chemistry with Fierstein was phenomenal and his singing was so sweet and croony and his acting was funny, hammy and really entertaining.

Yes, I'm pretty sure he is.

Bingo, Rath. Jonathan was a DREAM Herbie! (Oooo . . . your avatar is making me envision Debbie as Rose! Wouldn't THAT be killer!)

I saw Hadary as Herbie.
I saw Dossett as Herbie.
I liked them both.

I saw Dossett three times and found him to be eh...pretty good the first time and worse as time went on. He's a great, talented actor and singer dont get me wrong, I just couldnt stand his Herbie.

Marissa deserved to win. No one walked out of the theatre LOVING Rose, they did love Tracy though.

Suck it up.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

I found him excellent.

Like Mary Stuart Masterson (who was also robbed that year,) his performance grew, and grew, and grew to be something so astounding that they not only outshined everyone around them - but they seemed to literally MAKE the show.

MEF, That's the point.

The country was hungry for something to make them feel good. Tracy was the answer.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

To a certain extent, I agree. They probably figured that Bernadette has had her moment, and they wanted to reward a talented newcomer.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

TRACY was the answer not MARISSA. Yes she brought the role to life but IMO, as talented as she is and as great she was as Tracy, most everyone who followed her was just as good if not better.

Too bad awarding the show, book, and score wouldnt be enough to thank for having Tracy make the audience "feel good".

Dont get me wrong, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Hairspray and think its one of the best musicals in a while, but Bernadette and the revival of Gypsy was the production and performance of the year for me.

re: Winokur vs. Peters...Who deserved it?

Ms. Peter's tried, gave a strong performance and I think should have won.
Marrissa Jarret Winokur did a nice job, but Gypsy was tougher vocally (which Peters sort of had...she was weak sometimes), tougher dramatically (great acting performance) and is basically a one woman show. In Hairspray, you have Edna, Wilbur and a bunch of other characther's numbers and scenes. Rose is in almost every scene of Gypsy.
Like Merman, Bernadette Peters truly gave a great performance and deserved the Tony. But how can you buck a newcomer? (Ha ha, bad joke, I know.)

The entire U S of A votes for the Tonys now?

Sure would explain some things...

This argument pops up every few months. At least this time I amnot getting bashed for saying how awful I thought she was in it.
