To me, there will be no arguement.

In 2003, Bernadette Peter's performance as Mama Rose was FAR superior to that of the performance of Marissa Jaret Winokur as Tracy Turnblad.

Ms. Peters' performance at the TONYs brought the entire Radio City audience to its feet. Not even the flashy finale of HAIRSPRAY could do that.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think HAIRSPRAY is a wonderfully crafted show and more than deserved the Tony that year. But Winokur did not. There is substance to her character, surely. And she gave a wonderful performance.

But Peters brought me to tears when I saw GYPSY. That being one of my favorite shows, seeing Bernadette play that role has always been a dream of mine. When I finally got to see it, she was everything I had expected and more. I was floored. I sat in my seat for ten minutes after the show ended, with my jaw on the floor. Her performance was one of, if not THE, best performance I have witnessed.

We all know that the Tony's are all about politics

It often happens that awards are given to individuals/shows that NEED to be heralded and recognized. Not those that DESERVE to be acknowledged.

DESERVE and NEED are two very different things.

But, to answer your question...Bernadette probably should have won.

"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."

I'm personally willing to give Bernadette a Tony whenever she picks her nose.... but that's probably just me.

She got sick during previews and missed a few performances. But, by no means, did she miss a lot.

Didn't Bernadette miss a lot of performances?

NO SHE DID NOT. For the gazillionth time, she missed NINE performances TOTAL over the entire run. Eight previews when she was sick and one personal day to be with her now deceased husband while he had minor surgery.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I personally have to go with Marissa. At least at the time of the Tonys. Both gave great performances, and Bernadette certainly improved a great deal as the run went on, but in June 2003 Marissa deserved it.

Bernadette Peters. It is difficult to put up a fight against this even if you do believe Ms. Peters were miscast.

i agree with FOAnatic "Ms. Peters' performance at the TONYs brought the entire Radio City audience to its feet. Not even the flashy finale of HAIRSPRAY could do that." Bernadette had EVERY person in the theater standing.... now when that happens you tell me who deserved the tony.

Bernadette was gipped of the Tony and thats that! :)And attendance wise, Bernadette is probably the most dedicated person to her job... (even after losing her husband, she was performing two weeks later, hows that for dedication!)

I strongly believe that Bernadette should have won!

I was SO happy to FINALLY see Bernadette perform live. I saw Gypsy near the end of the run. Vocally, I thought she was amazing. It's probably the best the music has been performed (well, maybe Betty Buckley at Paper Mill Playhouse was better). However, I felt the character was out of her reach and she worked too hard to try to get there. Personally, I was exhausted by the end of the show. That being said (and I didn't feel this way at the time), I still think she should have won. I thought Marissa was great as Tracy and was a close 2nd because she made her performance seem effortless, but the overall skill required and provided in comparing these 2 performances (IMO) shifts my decision towards Bernadette. It's a shame that it wasn't as clear-cut as this year was (Victoria Clark is a GODDESS!!!!!)

I think they nominate the famous people just so they wont get embarresed? cause they nominated NLB for DRS and what would it look like if they didnt nominate john too. The same with Idina and kristen. And Christina Applegate got bad reviews but got niminated anyway. Anyone get my point??

Uh, no. John's nomination was very justified, Kristin and Idina are by no means "famous" and the same goes for Marissa Jaret Winokur. And if you're thinking they nominated Peters because she's "famous"...not a chance.

regarding the whole "I think they nominate the famous people just so they wont get embarresed?" thing, David Hyde Pierce is definitly more famous than say Christopher Seiber or Michael Mgrath (sorry, sp), and he didn't get nominated for Spamalot.
