jv92,
The role of Tracy is also onstage 99% of the show. The only time she's off stage for any length of time is in Act II during Wilbur and Edna's number.
The role chews people up.

I saw both MJW and Bernadette. I've also seen other Tracys and other Roses, and honestly, I would have given the Tony to MJW. I thought MJW did a great job and had wonderful warmth and comic timing in her performance. I liked Melissa Errico very much in "Amour" as well.
I've loved Bernadette in other things (and actually I think her "Annie" was a fine performance), but I have to agree with others, it seemed like the role of Rose overwhelmed her. She looked visibly strained and sounded strained as well vocally. Perhaps it's unfair to compare, but it didn't hold a candle to Tyne Daly's performance which I thought was one of the most powerful and dramatic performances I've seen in anything.

I'll let Bernadette herself say it: "It's not about prizes." (Approximate quote during a concert earlier this year.)

Posted: 11/10/05 at 10:42amI think a fair amount of the resentment that may people have regarding Winokur's win is the fact that she rubs a lot of people the wrong way. She's a brash, loud and frequently obnoxious newcomer who can say things that can make even me cringe. Whereas Bernadette is one of Broadways best-loved veteran stars for a reason. She's gorgeous, classy, a total pro and a hard worker. If for no other reason, many people would have loved to her win as a stinging rebuke to Reidel.

FIVE pages isn't enough for you?
Okay, I'll add mine. Bernadette all the way. She wasn't Ethel Merman though I don't think she ever tried to be. She was the first Rose I had seen that really made me understand the character as a human being (after all she was a person despite her monster tendancies). I still didn't like Rose but I understood how someone could drive themselves to those places. I appreciated this new interpretation of Rose and thought it was definitely the best performance by a leading actress in a musical that year. But time has moved on, the Tony was not awarded to her. She doesn't seem to be hurting for work.

They all mostly consisted of the same people posting back and forth and asking questions. Sheesh...

Posted: 11/11/05 at 11:08amBernadette peters was not consistent in her perfromance leading up to the tonys. When i watched her perform at the tonys, i said to myself that is not the performance I saw. Many people i know agreed. SHe improved as the show went on. But during tony voting, she was not up to par. Marissa gave an energetic performance that seperated her from the movie. I could go on. But at the time marissa did deserve the tonys over an unhealthy, inconsistent bernadette.

for the past couple of years i go to new york for my birthday in may, it is a big deal for me ( i live in dallas, tx ).
anyways, i saw both of these women in their shows and not only did bernadette peters make me cry uncontrollably with her "rose's turn" but i ditched tix i had to "bug" and "cat on a hot tin roof" and returned to see "gypsy" two more times.
this in itself may not seem like a big thing, but i am over 6"6" tall and so to endure the incredibly uncomfortably tight confines of the Shubert three times makes it special to me.
besides that, i never really liked "gypsy" - seen too many amateur companies do it, poorly, and too many mayor's wives try to deliver on rose with an emptiness. but bernadette was magnificent from the moment she stepped on stage. some may say that she was trying too hard, but that's what rose is - we never see the "real" rose until "rose's turn" - the whole time it's all about postureing and strutting so she can get ahead.
wow wow wow, when we watched the tonys that year i was completely speechless. it seemed that the trend of giving the prize to the "new kid" (sutton foster for "millie", heather headley for "aida", natasha richardson for "cabaret") just continued, which was unfortunate.

children&art,
Glad you enjoyed it. But I don't believe Marissa recieved the award because of a trend. She deserved it. And many of us thought Bernadette didn't even deserve a nomination.
