Wish List for Encores! 2013?

Darling of the Day would be at the top of my list, too.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Clark was definitely the first name that popped in my head. She's beyond perfect.

I second High Spirits.

Questions regarding Ballroom- is it just an issue with money? I've always wondered how cooperative the estate of Michael Bennett has been with them considering the massive amount of re-writes to the show- I know they are very protective of his work- not sure if its even an issue, so if someone with knowledge of the situation could shed some light on it for me I would be greatly appreciative!

Ballroom would be difficult - would they want to do an earlier version than the final Broadway saw? Bennett ended up cutting almost all the book numbers in order to have more ballroom dancing, making it less a musical than a play with a lot of dancing going on. I'd prefer actually to see something more like the show the writers originally envisioned, but then it wouldn't really be Ballroom, would it?

Michael Bennett's lawyer, and now executor of his estate is one of the people behind the BALLROOM revival, though I don't believe Jerry Mitchell has recreated any of Bennett's work in any of the workshops.

The issue has been raising money. Its a big show with a big cast, dark subject matter with an older leading lady. And while Tyne Daly is brilliant, she's not exactly a huge bankable name anymore.

Its a tough sell to investors.

Thanks MB!

I've read that Tyne is very very good in the workshops so far, its just so hard to imagine anyone topping Dorothy Loudon- shame on me I know, I'm one of the ones who has been defending Elena over at the Marquis!

Considering ballroom dancing is on television every week, i"m surprised BALLROOM hasn't been revived or revised.

Outside of the title, BALLROOM doesn't have much in common with anything you'd see on dancing with the stars. Its about two lonely old people who find love at a local dance hall. It's about age and death and is based on a flop musical -- its not exactly for the Lion King crowd.

As I recall, DuBarry Was a Lady was one of the few Encores! disappointments. If they are going to recycle shows they've done before (and I'm not espousing it, one way or the other), I'd like to think they'd take another shot at it. Maybe Nathan Lane, Jan Maxwell and Cheyenne?

By my count they have completed 57 shows in regular season; next year is the 20th season and if they do "Fiorello!" it won't be the start of a repeat policy but a special commemoration of the first Encores! production.

What about HARRIGAN 'N HART? I just rediscovered the flop from the 80s, and it seems like a perfect fit for Encores!

i think it'd be interesting if they did a production of a show ps classics has been making studio albums for in their "Lost Musical series." (like Life Begins at 8:40, Sweet Little Devil, and Sweet Bye and Bye)
For me, once I find a new cast album I love, I want to see the show!

"Sondheim Fan 5: I agree with most of your Charles Strouse shows, especially the wonderful GOLDEN BOY. But are you really interested in seeing NICK & NORA, the positively worst musical I have ever seen? The audience will go to sleep, if its lucky."

Is Nick & Nora that bad? I like the score a lot, what I've heard of it.

I'd love to see THE BAKER'S WIFE with Sutton Foster as Genevieve.

The Cat and the Fiddle. It's got a great Jerome Kern score. I understand that the late John McGlinn wanted to do a complete recording of it but wouldn't take it on unless he could do the whole thing from start to finish, thus requiring two CDs, which the powers that be were reluctant to do. It seems if they're going to do Sweet Adeline and Music in the Air, they should take a chance on this almost unsung gem.
