Wish List for Encores! 2013?

They did No Strings with James Naughton and Marcy Hariel (was it?) a few years ago. Maybe more than a few.

SMILE is one I'd love to see.

I think Encores has become too 'big' and too 'serious' an entity to spend the time and money on things like RACHAEL LILY ROSENBLOOM (which surely would have to be recreated from scratch, I can't imagine those orchestrations are sitting around...)

Ditto things like BRING BACK BIRDIE, HENRY SWEET HENRY, etc.

MUSICALS TONIGHT and MUFTI and some of the other fringe musical concert groups have done a nice job picking up the reigns on those kinds of titles.

I think DO I HEAR A WALTZ is a likely choice for an upcoming season given their ongoing relationship with Rodgers and Sondheim...

While I really wanted the commercial revival (which I'm sure is still being considered), I DO! I DO! starring Martin Short and Bernadette Peters would be good for encores.

My complete aversion to that casting aside, I Do! I Do! is too small for Encores (and probably a Broadway run).

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Don't you think at least one of their shows should lack a pre-existing good recording? You know - do one a year that everyone doesn't already know like the backs of their hands?

I've always wished that "Fiorello" would be revived but all the "pros" tell me that it's too dated and has little current relevance because it's based on a character that so few around today know anything about. And was Nathan Lane not born to play the lead? And that score, i.e. "When Did I Fall In Love", which Audra now uses to open her concerts.

And yes to "Mack and Mabel", just to hear "I Won't Send Roses".

If you look at the first few seasons of Encores there were a lot of surprises and a lot of shows I personally wasn't familiar with. It was great going in and experiencing a show I knew nothing about.

The one that sticks out at the moment and all these years later was Sweet Adeline and the song Some Girl is on Your Mind. I never heard the song before and you could have heard a pin drop in the theatre. I have to say it was a showstopper.

Same here. The song that sticks out for me was the one "My Husband's First Wife." Was it Dorothy Loudon that sang that? Such a cute song.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I forgot till you said that that Dorothy Loudon was in it. The other thing I can't believe it was Feb 1997. I would have never thought Sweet Adeline was 15 years ago.

But to me that was what Encores was all about. The Encores from then and the Encores of Now really aren't the same. They were never as fully staged as they are now. Scripts were used more.

A Charles Strouse season could be fun.

- It's A Bird! It's A Plane! It's Superman! (though it was heavily re-written in Texas ~3 yrs ago and there was talk of that production having further life)
- Nick & Nora
- Golden Boy, Rags, or All American

They could also easily do a Jerry Herman season.
- Dear World
- The Grand Tour
- Milk & Honey

Is KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN too new of a show? They could even do it as a Summer Stars show with Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Of course, more obscure material like RAGS would be nice.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, it's Superman could work, do they require permission from DC/Warner Bros to put it on as they control the Superman rights.

Marymount Manhattan College did the a newly revised version of RAGS in the spring, this version is going to be available for licensing as well. But Stephen Schwartz along with Charles Strouse, whose wife directed it, were both somewhat involved. And there was some talk of bringing the show to Encores next season.

Sondheim Fan 5: I agree with most of your Charles Strouse shows, especially the wonderful GOLDEN BOY. But are you really interested in seeing NICK & NORA, the positively worst musical I have ever seen? The audience will go to sleep, if its lucky.

They already did Golden Boy (2002).

And I hope that rumor about them thinking of bringing back Fiorello is nothing but a silly rumor; it would be truly sad if Encores began doing reruns after only 18 years. 54 shows thus far is a nice number, but the options are hardly sufficiently exhausted to justify repeating themselves.

As a subscriber I wouldn't be happy if they started bringing shows back. Still a lot more they can produce.
