In my opinion Phantom is a polished show. I'm not a big fan of ALW or the score (the only score that I feel if it were radically altered could be turned into a redeamable set of music is Sunset Boulevard. The rest I feel are lost causes), however Hal Prince's staging as well as the epic sweep of the story are what carry that show. And, people believe when they're seeing it they see a real opera and it makes them feel impressive.
I think Rent has some of the truly most awful music I've heard in my life and I think the story is rather boring too. To me, it is the show that needs to go.

Is Mama Mia really still running?
That show made me sad.

Posted: 7/16/06 at 7:43pmI would say the only three shows on Broadway right now that I truly disliked are Color Purple, Tarzan, and Jersey Boys (funny that they all are from this season...) Of those I think Color Purple rates as the worst for making what should be moving often times laughably awful.

Phantom is just ridiculously bad. Bad lyrics. Bad book. Bad music. The only thing saving it is the design, which shouldn't be the star of the show.
Tarzan has one of the weakest scores I've ever heard. Even the songs from the film, which I found charming, are awful now. The book isn't terrific and the cast doesn't impress me.
Spamalot. Oh God. I tried listening to the score again after a relative raved about it. I just don't get it. Why do people like it?
I'm not a fan of jukebox musicals. I'm not going to critique each one since there are so many.
Chicago bad? What the hell are some of you talking about? It's one of the most exiting shows on Broadway, not to mention (in my opinion) the best musical theatre piece ever written.

I don't get to see a lot of shows, as I don't live in New York. So I'm going to be honest and say that I haven't seen either of the two shows I'll mention, I've just heard the music. PotO and Spamalot. Spamalot was charming the first, like, three listens through and then it just got to be obnoxious. I just can't stand listening to Phantom at all. It's so annoying.
And Wicked, while not being the worst show on Broadway, is probably up there with the most obnoxious. That I HAVE seen.
As for shows that I woud just never see, Jersey Boys, Mama Mia (or just any ukebox musical, for that matter), Hot Feet, Tarzan. Just no interest there.
I think The Producers is mediocre (seen it), Chicago is a good musical, I don't know about the current production as I haven't seen it. ANd even though I positively adore Rent, I do have to agree tha tit's getting stale. I listened to the OBCR for two years and finally got to see it on Broadway and, as someone else has said, I was actually being distracted during ICY:R and Goodbye Love. It broke my heart that I wasn't completely engaged in it. It must be the cast. I didn't enjoy Matt Caplan at all as Mark.
