In London once, I saw a horrible revival of Noel Coward's Cavalcade. I should have known it was going to be bad because it was promoted as the show with "a cast of 300"...not necessarily a "good" thing.
Even the "star," Jeremy Clyde, didn't show up!

No tomMonster!
I still don't get the 3penny hate. I could go on but no one would care.
I didn't get the Into The Woods revival. Why? It wasn't all that different. The cast was pretty bland. There was nothing really new. And is was so soon.

The 2002 production of Into the Woods was the definitive production. I love Bernadette Peters, but she was too over the top in Act One of the video. Vanessa Williams was more controlled, I think. Joanna Gleason was good, but she was better in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Chip Zien was whiney as the Baker, and Danielle Ferland (spelling?) was annoying as Little Red Ridinghood. 2002 was much more colorful and less dreary. Besides, Chad Kimball was wonderful as Milky-White. Why couldn't he get a Tony nomination?
So far, my least favorite revival was the Bernadette Peters revival, but I give it a B-, so I've pretty much liked every revival I've seen.

Would not have gone near that revival of "La Cage" with a 10 foot pole.
That revival of Fiddler looked like it was set at the Box Social in Oklahoma.

I must admit to preferring the revival of ITW over the original production, primarily because I feel the set and costume design of the original was quite possibly one of the WORST and LEAST magical designs I have ever seen. It saddens me that that brown and grey distaster is the visual component future generations will associate with the show due to its availibility on video. UGH! It defines "drab". Frankly, I thought they would entertain the possibility of filming the new ITW, especially after it won the BEST REVIVAL Tony and the fact that Williams is an A-list star. Well, hopefully a film version will finally come to fruition if ST is successful (even if it isn't...).
That being said, Gleason owns the role. She IS the Baker's Wife. And Tom Aldredge is absolute perfection as the Narrator/Mysterious Man. In the revival, Kerry O'Malley was adequate, but the role faded into the backround (admittedly probably more a fault of the writing than the actress) and I've never been a fan of John McMartin - onstage or (especially) off), althought he was passable in the SWEET CHARITY film.

Disagree with the last poster
While not the greatest show to begin with, we found it to be entertaining. Out of 10 we gave it an 8 1/2

After seeing the production of Into the Woods producted at the Stratford Festival 2 seasons ago, it confirmed my thoughts about how lame the revival really was.
There was really nothing new about it. They made the sets and costumes more magical, added in Our Little World and changed The Last Midnight a bit. But overall, why did we need a revival? How long had it been since the original production closed on Broadway? 10 years? Maybe a little more. I thought a lot of the casting in the revival was pretty drab and overall the production was very uninspired.
Here are some photos from the Stratford production.

I can't help but laugh about that being said about the most successful, longest running, and quite possibly the most acclaimed revival of all time.

That is one freaky Witch costume.
Sorry about that earlier post. My mind was elsewhere at the time. I meant to say the Bernadette Peters revival of Annie Get Your Gun.
