Daniel Dae Kim, a SAG Award-winning actor, dishes about David Henry Hwang's comedy ''Yellow Face'' and race with Ronny Chieng, who just won an Emmy for ''The Daily Show.''
I didn't know anything about this play so went in blind today and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the entire cast was excellent and just a really very moving story. This is something I'll absolutely make room for to go see again before it closes.
Regarding the Intermission/No Intermission part of this thread: I think leaving for “relief” during a movie is fine. Friends will be able to “catch you up or you can see it again, with the pause option, when it comes to streaming services.
I think some of us, when seeing a live theatre performance, may feel that we’re disrespecting the cast if we leave the performance at any time. I’ve always felt like that when seeing a show on Broadway.
Really enjoyed the matinee yesterday (and the talkback afterwards with DHH and Leigh Silverman)! I think this play managed to touch on so many topics that are still relevant and also fairly widely varied. I thought it was really smart in its construction and while it feels almost meandering from one issue to another (I was surprised about where it went many times in the second half), it really comes together and I was never bored.
Daniel Dae Kim is excellent as DHH but it's a very very good cast all together. One thing they mentioned that they've done differently this time is they cast people of all races/ethnicities and that there are a lot of moments when an actor playing a character will very obviously not be of the ethnicity of that character (and they've been very thoughtful about when and where these moments happen), which also adds a meta-commentary to it. I'm curious to listen to the Audible production and see if I can spot any differences, but I really did think this play was shockingly relevant for today without hitting you over the head with its message.
