I think I get the concept behind the High Society poster...they're supposed to be aristocats.
(I couldn't help it).

Posted: 11/13/09 at 11:38pmI can see it being sold at a kiosk at a mall. You know those kiosks. With the shirts with the paintings of wolves on them, or cats in a basket.

I've always hated that abysmal, pedestrian artwork for FOOTLOOSE.
But then in retrospect if any artwork represented a show perfectly it was that one.

This is one of the worst ones that comes to mind. I find it mildly disturbing... there's something almost indecent/frightening about it!
#35re: You want bad artwork?
Posted: 11/16/09 at 2:36pmI agree ^ that's pretty ugly.

OK, THE WILD PARTY logo (and show) is beyond brilliant.
The picture on the playbill/poster is a vintage 20s painting. I would link the full picture, but it is a nude so I don't wanna get in trouble. Needless to say, if you see the entire painting you will never forget it! It's very disturbing. Back to the close-up of just the face...
Does the face belong to a man or a woman? Is he/she screaming in pain or ecstasy? Why are his/her eyes so vacant?
All those elements (gender roles, actual sexuality vs. perceived sexuality, vapidness and feeling empty inside) are such important themes in the show.
Did you guys even see the show? If you did, you'd realize this was a very appropriate poster for the show as it was done on Broadway.
P
P.S. You prove my point with your original post, Wenn!

Good point, Pgenre. I did not see the show, and if I did, I probably would see what an apt symbol the Playbill is.
I was judging the art as shown which, as a cropped image, emphasizes the rawness of the original painting. I much prefer the painting in its entirety.

I love the Broadway The Wild Party poster. I remember seeing it around NYC that year and being transfixed by the jazz age aesthetic.
This is a fun thread, and I'd like to get some discussion about artwork for Broadway musicals rolling.
I am researching artists, and one question I have at the moment is: Who designed the Got To Go Disco poster? Frankly, I love it.
#40re: You want bad artwork?
Posted: 5/12/10 at 4:37pmJoe Eula designed the Got Tu Go Disco poster. He's a great artist. He designs all of Liza's stuff. He also drew the poster for the Supremes' Lincoln Center concert in 1965.

Posted: 5/12/10 at 4:44pmI should have guessed that! Thank you so much! Is he still with us, one wonders?

LOOOOVE the THE WILD PARTY poster!
The old PROMISES, PROMISES, however...
"Wheee! Let's go girls and pose against this giant phallic key! Look! It's tilting UP! Tee-hee-hee!"

The girls around the key was way better than the one with the girl with her legs wide open...talk about lewd and suggestive...what was up with that?!! All that's missing is her va-jay-jay.

Posted: 5/12/10 at 5:46pmI love that someone would say the Wild Party has a bad logo, because it is mildly disturbing and "indecent/frightening". You are basically showing that it is good.
#46re: You want bad artwork?
Posted: 5/12/10 at 5:49pmlol @ besty. That logo belongs on a show entitled. "Come F*ck Me Fellas".

Both Promises artwork are pretty over the top, but I think they are aesthetically interesting.
Joe Eula was artistic director on Got Tu Go Disco so that would make sense that he would design the poster. He passed away in 2004.
RIP EULA

I've always thought the poster for the Papermill revival of 'Applause' with Stefanie Powers was incredibly boring.

I've always liked the HIGH SOCIETY and FOOTLOOSE artwork.
And THE WILD PARTY is one of the best ever...I don't know WHAT you're talking about.
