Yeah, I don't have a problem with the Met. They have a 200 million dollar budget and only play 32 weeks a year. The ticket prices don't even come close to covering their costs.
But even at $110 per ticket, every show on broadway operates at a profit.

id love to see a complete breakdown of running costs for a major Broadway hit along side those of a 'flop' for a weeks run. Im bearing in mind here Wicked is taking $1m a week at 52 weeks a year for 3 years!!
Anyone?

Why would they charge "hot ticket prices" right out of the gate, are they that sure of themselves? and does this perceived arrogance lend to tougher reviews by the critics...to me its like opening a resturant accross the street from le bec fin and then charging those prices before ayone has tried your place...the critics will be very tough....the critics expecations will be higher than they were for the Odd couple with this pricing
...comparing YF to the New York Yankees is unproven...some of you are acting like this is a 13 tony awards based on the pricing of the ticket...what fools you are
comparing YF to Jersey Boys or The original Producers is also a fools game....
they have alot to prove, and they are hiding and thats why the the offical YF website does not list the tcket prices for NYC yet...

Posted: 6/24/07 at 6:57pmYankees tickets range from $400 for the very small "Field Championship" area to $12 for bleachers. The majority of the seats are around $60-$12. So it's HARDLY comparable to the majority of a barn of a theatre being over $400/ticket.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

I wasn't trying to compare Young Frankenstein to the Yanks or Jersey Boys. I was simply saying that we all have different priorities.
I agree that the $451 seat is outrageous when the musical has yet to be a proven winner. If it is a huge hit, however, there will be plenty of folks willing to ante up. Obviously Brooks has a lot of confidence. If he ends up with egg on his face, I suspect it wouldn't faze him in the least

Personally, it doesn't matter how good the show is, no show is worth $451 or could ever be worth that much.
Are there going to be any $100 seats? The Hilton is a huge theatre - I can't imagine them getting over 8,000 people a week to pay over $200.

According to the playbill.com article balcony seats will be $60-$80 and some orchestra seats will be $120, I think.
And I'm with you all the way, BSoBW. This is quite ridiculous.

From Riedel's column:
"And ticket brokers - who snap up most of the best seats early so that, if the show's a hit, they can sell them at even higher prices - fear heavy losses if "Young Frankenstein" isn't the greatest musical of all time."
If Young Frankenstein's high premium prices are making life miserable for all those low-life ticket brokers who make it impossible for any of us to get decent seats to hit shows at face value then I fully support them.

i would like to buy some of those $120 orchestra seats, but i'm sure there'll be very few, and the few that are sold for that price will probably go fast.
i cant see many tourists and families that would want to pay 200 dollars for an orchestra seat. sure there are many people loaded with money, but the majority of tourists (which are mostly families) wouldnt pay 200 dollars per seat for their whole family!
i dont know, maybe im wrong, but my family has seen nearly 40 Broadway shows, so we obviously love theatre, but i dont think wed ever pay that much for orchestra seats.
120 is reasonable, but over 200 is a bit much to ask...
and im just reiterating what pretty much everyone has said, haha

From Playbill
'The New York Times reports that this price will apply to the 100 or so best seats in the house, which are termed "premier" seats. Premium seats, of which there are approximately 120, will be sold for $375. The remaining seats in the orchestra and dress circle will be sold for $120. Seats in the balcony will cost $60-$80.
The New York daily also says that for all other performances, the premium and premier seats will be priced $100 less than the Friday and Saturday rates.
A production spokesperson told the Times there will be $25 orchestra seats available at most performances of Young Frankenstein, which begins previews Oct. 11 at the Hilton Theatre with an official opening Nov. 8.'
So a total of 220ish seats will be priced very high, if the Hilton is indeed as big as people say surely there are still lots of decent seats in the stalls at regular prices?
This should be a marketing dream for the other shows on broadway if they are clever, using the high prices to put people off and encourage business to them

thanks for the article, NS
it actually isnt as bad as i thought, if there are only 120 seats in the orchestra priced that high, and if there are also going to be $25 seats in the orchestra, too
so people can still get orchestra seats at decent prices :)

Posted: 6/29/07 at 11:16amSurely the 220 seats arnt the total seats in the stalls? in such a large theatre (in my head im cpmaring to Apollo victoria in London)meaning there will be lots of decent $120 ones as well

yeah, the $25 dollar seats are probably partial view
maybe there will be some sort of rush or lottery after all? i dont see them selling those online, because those would go pretty fast

Posted: 6/29/07 at 11:45amThe Hilton is a cave of a theatre. I sat in row T for Ragtime and felt like I was out in the parking lot. They have a lot of nerve asking this before the show even goes into previews. Sadly though, there are enough saps out there who will pay these prices and again, Brooks leads the campaign to make the theatre almost untouchable for most of the world. Thanks Mel!

Posted: 6/29/07 at 12:01pmActually, i'm not a huge fan of Streisand at all. I just wish the huge set for Young Frankenstein would fall on Mel. I don't think it'll be big enough to smash his ego though....
