Mine is Stevie Wonder's cover of Seasons of Love which was actually included on the original cast recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ-4ikcohCs
what is yours?? Post a link to the recording if possible too!
Not sure if it counts, per se, but I LOVE Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's rendition of "I Can't Give You Anything but Love."
Also, I prefer Sara Bareilles' "I Didn't Plan It" over the cast album version.

Followed by: Rod Stewart "Til There Was You" (Etta James' version was wonderful too); Jackson 5 "Morning Glow"; Todd Rundgren "Something's Coming"' Robert Goulet "What Kind of Fool Am I?"

What a wonderful topic for a thread!
My very favorite is "I Only Have Eyes For You," by The Flamingoes.
Some runners up: NIna Simone's "Feeling Good," Aretha's "If Ever I Would Leave You," Sammy Davis, Jr's "Gonna Build A Mountain," The Beatles "Til There Was You," Tom Waits' "Somewhere," Judy Collins' "Pirate Jenny."

Yep, gotta include Tom Waits' "Somewhere."
Summertime, Janis Joplin. I still get goosebumps every time I hear it.

Absolutely agree with this. It actually came up on shuffle on my phone this afternoon while driving back in to the city from New Jersey and it still amazes me what an incredibly unique take on the song it is.

Janis's Summertime is chilling. Sorry I did not list it myself.

How has nobody mentioned Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl?"
Andrew Samonsky's version of I Won't Say from the Disney film HERCULES.
Though Andrew could sing gibberish and I'd still melt.

Probably because it isn't a true cover, only what's called a "sample" (in the music world). She utilizes the song for the chorus. That's it. Perhaps nobody mentioned it because it's a total bastardization of its source material, too.

Yeah I know, my post was in jest. Just think though, there must be some children seeing Fiddler for the first time who recognize Rich Man as "that Gwen Stefani song."

Gwen Stefani also sampled "The Lonely Goatherd" on her song "Wind It Up." Its music video also had very strong Sound of Music overtones...
The unforgettable Dinah Washington and If I Loved You.
