I really want to go to Matilda.However it feels wrong going alone but if I convince an out of town guest with an 11 year old it feels better. Anybody else ashamed of going to Matilda without kids?

It's completely fine to go without kids.

Heck, I went to see "Dear Edwina" off- (or off-off? It was a very intimite theater) Broadway with an adult friend of mine (both in our late 20's) because we liked the composers' other work. We both enjoyed the show, and nobody batted an eye. I think you should see anything you like! After all, your money is the same color as someone who shows up with a child's is!

I saw zero kids in the audience when I went in September. It's a pretty dark show. I love going to the theater alone, no shame!

I went by myself....I really ENJOY going to the theater by myself,actually. I can read my Playbill and not feel obligated to chat.

And (SHHH....)you can get some great single seats for very popular shows.

Dude, my advice is to go and pick another show. Matilda is a confusing and tiresome show. Nobody can tell you what it is about. Its really the classic example of putting lipstick on a pig. Go to a feel good show and something that EVERYONE Likes and Loves Kinky Boots. Trust me on this Dude. These other people on this message board are either Yelpers or Actors associated with the show. Kinky beat out Matilda for the Best new Musical on Broadway this year. What does that tell you? its Awesome, you will thank me I guarantee it !!!

I always go to the theatre alone in New York, and I'm never the only one there solo. I've seen MATILDA twice and enjoyed it greatly. Many adults were there without children both times.

I personally prefer Kinky Boots. But that's not the question here. The poster wants to know if going to Matilda alone without a kid would feel awkward. I am a grown woman and have seen Matilda three times all times without kids - and two times by myself. I felt totally at ease as you should too.

I would personally feel at ease at any show I went to - without or without kids...no matter if it's a kid show or not. No one really knows if you are sitting alone or with the person next to you anyway...so who cares. Enjoy what you want to see. I have met some very nice people going alone.

I saw Matilda alone...but then again, I like going to the theatre alone. I get to see the show I want and sit where I want.

Stevie3...not everyone likes Kinky Boots. In fact, you couldn't pay me to see it. There...just proved you wrong.

Hate to tell you, Aleha, but YOU sound like the 3 year old. While I think stevie's opinion's is misplaced here - he has every right to have it, and to voice it.

To the actual OP: No, I wouldn't worry about going alone. I honestly don't know what the big deal would be. I go to the theatre (and out to dinner) in NY all the time. I find it quite relaxing and time to reflect.

Libby: have you SEEN Kinky Boots? If you haven't, you haven't proven anything.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I visit NYC, most of the time, alone and see shows all the time. When I saw Matilda, most of the audience were adults. However, when I saw Annie alone, (front row rush seats) two adult drunk women afterwards found it necessary to say they thought it was odd that an adult male would see a children's show without kids. Normally they would have been on the receiving end of a cussing, but I responded and stated I thought it was odd that two adult women would be at a children's show with children and be drunk. They shut up then. So don't worry what people think.

Many people go solo to the theater, for different reasons, their spouses are not interested, or they are on different schedules than their friends. What ever reason, is no big deal. Plus you are never alone, there are people sitting all around you. Sometimes they are solo too and strike up a conversation.

I used to ask friends if they wanted to go see a show, they would say yes, then I'd give them dates and they would give me excuses why those dates are no good. Then ask give me a date and then never do. Now I ask, if they commit that is great, if not I just go because if I waited I would never get to go. And most likely if I love a show I will go back and encourage my friends to join me. So do not hesitate, go and enjoy, if you friend can go great, if not their loss.

There is no imaginable reason not to go to the theater alone!! It does not matter what you are seeing, it can be a very peaceful experience. And for any who say that Kinky Boots is a better show than Matilda: I throughly believe that their intellectual capacity for theater is low. I love Kinky Boots and find it to be an extremely enjoyable show, but it is no where near as cleverly and passionately constructed at Matilda is. Matilda has its flaws (sound design), but is nonetheless the best musical on Broadway IMHO.

Oy. Why even make it one or the other? Why can't people be allowed to prefer whatever the hell they like?

Frankly, I didn't think either show was "all that", but don't begrudge anyone loving either or even both of them.

I love going to the theatre alone. When the curtain rises, I could give a rat's arse about who I'm with and/or anyone around me. Unless they're a distraction.
