Cheap seats for Saturday matinee!
The dvd isn't that bad. The recording of the concert, though, is outstanding. I get goosebumps and tears every time I hear Mandy Patinkin and George Hearn sing "goddamnest hours that I ever spent, were waiting for the girls upstairs," and no one can sing In Buddy's Eyes like Barbara Cook.
I saw 70, Girls, 70 at Encores in April, and they did the whole book. That was delightful, although it's a shame that Olympia Dukakis couldn't get away from her script and couldn't sing.
I just saw Follies for the first time last year. I waited 35 years to see it. This needs to be produced more often, because it's one of the greatest musicals ever written,
it's Sondheim's best score, and it's the most misunderstood musical of all time.
I wish they would do a Live from Lincoln Center type of thing. Broadcast it on PBS and only show it twice.
I mean, hey, Audra isn't that well know outside NY either but we got two in three months.
I'm sure there are plans.
Doubt they're legal, though.
Record: audio or visually? Aren't there like 500 recordings of Follies? Sorry I know I'm overexaggerating but isn't like the Papermill one supposed to be the definitive recording?
I would hope that they would record this concert. It seems like a dream come true. But who knows, they could revive it yet again but in 5 years we'll have another dream cast again.
I would have loved to see Ebersole as Sally.

Ebersole could definitely sing the sh*t out of Sally's material, but I picture being a way better Phyllis. She can totally play that icy, sleek part with a hollow interior aching.

- There's only 4. Everyone always says there's so many recordings. But 4 isn't really that much. And there's not one perfect one. The Papermill recording is probally the best, but it's not the definitive.
Don't shows like Les Miz have A LOT more than 4 recordings? Give me a break. Follies deserves it.

The BEST (not not most complete) recording of FOLLIES is the Original Broadway Cast.
The MOST COMPLETE (but not best) is the PaperMill recording.
The Concert Cast is an exciting listen, though and wonderfully sung.
And since I saw the London production, I have a fondness for that one, especially Rigg's "Ah, But Underneath."
The London Recording loses credit with me for cutting the prologue. Though COUNTRY HOUSE is a great addition.
I too doubt that the concert will be recorded. Encores! used to have a contract with some label, but the CDs actually lost them money rather than making money. Though once in a blue moon we get a recording, the last one was The New Moon form the 2003 series. And before we get Follies I'm still waiting for them to record the No Strings production they did.
That being said, I do wish that they will make some type of recording. Although the OBCR is pretty hard to beat. I will be there for a preview showing on the 7th and will report back to everybody how the show was.

I agree with Piercemn about the Follies Concert DVD. The editing is awful, but I love watching it.
I'm still unsure if I'll be able to go, but I can't wait to hear what everyone has to say when they get back (:
