I don't think there is one.
Everyone has a different idea of what is the "perfect showtune." It's completely subjective.
I will be completely obvious, however, and make a note that it's not Defying Gravity.

"There's No Business Like Show Business"!
I mean, it owns all.

I don't think there is any possible way to answer this question.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up for me lamenting.
What I mean is that there are many showtunes that can be classified as "the best" in various different categories. Best ballade, best opening number, etc. I don't think there is any one song that is the catchall has everything that there is to have and can be classified as the best overall.

I'm torn between "What I Did for Love", and "Big Spender".
Maybe the American Theatre Wing can have a special on "The 100 Greatest Showtunes of All Time".

re: best showtune ever#10

re: best showtune ever#11
Posted: 9/5/05 at 7:43pmwell my favorite is Our Time from Merrily. In the context of the show, I think it is possibly the saddest song I've ever heard and yet so hopeful.

Why is it an idiotic question? It's a lot more thought-provoking than yet another Wicked thread about whether or not Kristin Chenoweth actually hit a high M over L at 8:44 on January 11th, isn't it?
I vote for 'Everything's Comin' Up Roses'.

the answer is obvious ... the best showtune ever is "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"... I thought everybody knew that.

As everyone said, obviously there isn't one ultimate show tune, but here are more than a dozen (in chronological order) that rank up there with the best ever.
I Got Rhythm
Anything Goes
There's No Business Like Show Business
Some Enchanted Evening
Fugue For Tinhorns
Glitter And Be Gay
I Could Have Danced All Night
Tonight
Ya Got Trouble
Everything's Coming Up Roses
Hello, Dolly
Big Spender
Broadway Baby
All That Jazz
