we sort of got into this in the evita thread about who has the better vocal range but i still think that kerry has the better range(those aren't easy notes to hit in suddenly seymour) l also noticed that earlier this year there seemed to be a lot of kerry fans and posts praising her while now we mostly see posts about wicked that are praising idina. I think I like Idina's voice more than kerry's but if you ever watch those clips of kerry singing and watch her up close it seems so much more effortless than the clips i saw of idina up close, maybe it was the song, i don't know. What do y'all think?
it's definatley the song. I'd like to see Kerry sing "Over the Moon". Not to mention "Defying Gravity" and "NO Good Deed"
I don't know, I'll tell you after I see 'Wicked.' However, Kerry's voice is amazing and she hits some notes I didn't even know existed...and that's meant in the best way possible.
Oh geez, why did you have to start this thread?
It's hard to say who has the better vocal range. The shows don't always call for the actresses to use their full range, so who knows how high or low each actress can go?
And as far as their voices, I think they are two distinct voices that are hard to compare. Kerry has played characters that have had her use very "character" voices, like all squeaky and obnoxious. But she can definitely belt out the notes.
Idina, in my opinion, has a more "rock" voice, though its not extremely hoarse or bad. Its just hard to compare. She doesn't have to use the 'Audrey' or 'Penny' voices as Elphaba.
I personally like them both in their own elements..
true. so let's stop this thread before it gets out of hand and people will start to post things totally off subject.
Let me just comment quickly- hehe.
I think Idina has a wider range. Idina can go pretty high, but she can go very low as well. Some notes in "I'm Not That Girl" are pretty hard for a woman to hit. Do you think Kerry would be able to sing that song?

I am also adding something... At the ending of 'defying gravity' Idina hits what i think is a high F(not listening right now jsut tryign to do it from memory)... she doesnt just hit it she belts it, which is quite a high belt note. Kerry has a much more nasaly voice and to go high she sometimes puts the sound in her nose while idina really does just belt like none other... just my two cents
You know if Kristin ever left the show Kerry would be perfect as Glinda!

After seeing Idina perform at Joe's Pub, she definitely has a broad range. Not to mention I've been very impressed vocally with her in RENT, Wild Party, and most recently WICKED. After seeing Kerry in a few things now I'm not nearly as impressed with her.
I am impressed with both.
They are both STARS.
I prefer Kerry but that is me.
I guess for me it would be a tie with Kristin and Kerry.
Both have the most gorgeous voices and are way to goodlooking for words.
I am having blond envy.

maybe too excited
Kerry will never have the range or voice quality Kristin has, in my opinion. Kristin can sing Colatura Soprano, and has a lower range as well- she sounds beautiful all over.
Do you think Kerry could sing Glinda's parts in "No One Mourns The Wicked"? Definitely not.
I like Erik's mud wrestling idea.
I...have no comment. *innocent whistle, discreetly starts collecting buckets of mud*
