how different would the face of Broadway look if Bob Fosse had not died in 1987?b what shows would he have choreographed, directed?
- Kiss of the SpiderWoman
- he might have created his own show in the vein of Contact or Movin' Out
- The Life
- The Wild Party (LaChuisa)
- The Full Monty
- he would have given us a legitimate film version of Chicago
- revival of Nine
- maybe a Redhead with a new starlet
- think what he could have done with the revival of Follies...wow!
If he did the film of CHICAGO.
It would've been absolutely incredible. Words can't express.
I didn't realize Chicago was illegitimate.
yeah wonderwaiter, it was stripped of it's sleaze and santized by Rob Marshall
Really? I've never seen it on stage. (Gasp, gasp. I know.)
Given the history of movie versions of musicals, I avoided seeing it - even after the Oscars. A straight, non-musical friend of mine who is a big movie buff was so blown away by it he actually went out and bought a copy of it for me, just so I could see what he was talking about. The fact that a movie musical could inspire that reaction in someone was all it took to sell me. (Well, that and the fact that it WAS a good movie.)
I'll see it on stage one of these days, I'm sure.
anyways, back to the point of the thread - how would bway be different with fosse still around.....
well it didnt ruin the film at all.
It was a very good movie. I think children&art is being unfair.
Huh? Unfair? I LOVED the movie. It was my preconceived notions that kept me from seeing it sooner. The point I was making was that the movie was good enough to make a non-theater person force a theater person to watch it. That makes it all the more successful, in my opinion.
Oh I'm sorry, I meant children&art. Long day. I'll change it.
Oh. Gotcha.

children&art unfair? No! Never!
Anyhoo, the choreography for Sweet Charity would have actually been choreography, not actors having a seizure on stage.

I know you are overstating in an attempt to be funny. But. The choreography in the Sweet Charity revival... which is what I assume you are refering to since it isn't clear in your post... was at worst pedestrian. At no point was the choreography as bad as you seem to claim. It just was uninspired. That kind of exageration does not do much for anyone.

if Bob Fosse were still alive...the world would be much sexier of a place. Hey, any news of Ann Reiking and her health?...and can we turn this into "the official Bob Fosse love thread", because he was truly a revolution in his own.

If Bob Fosse was alive...
Oh my. We'd have 20 more years of credits. The world would be blessed with so much more. Broadway would still have one of its Golden Age auteurs.
I'm certain Broadway would indeed be a sexier place - and one wonders if Chicago would have had such a revival.
I think "The Wild Party" directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse would have been fascinating. I'm sure there are others.
There probably would have been more films (both musical and non) and perhaps some more TV work. The man was really so successful in so many areas.
This thread has got me wondering what it would be like if say, Michael Bennett was still us... (among so many of the artists we've lost)...
*sigh*

If Bob Fosse were still alive then lots of chorus girls would be pregnant.
I wish the current revival of CHICAGO was his. His choreography was superior to what you folks are seeing now.
My best friend and I were disscussing how amaizing the Nine revival and LaChuisa's Wild Party would have been under the direction of Fosse. We pretty much said he would have brought out edgier themes of Wild Party, but could only imagine what he would have done with Nine.
If Fosse were still alive.....Melanie Griffith and Brooke Shields would have been shot for THINKING about playing Roxie

If Bob Fosse was alive he would have to get a restraining order on me. hehe! But seriously, Bway is doing very well right now with a few really great shows; but if he were still alive it would be WAYYYYYY better.
I'm interested as to wether or not the people that are commenting about the Broadway Wild Party actually saw it. First of all... if all the people that pretend to have seen this show actually saw this show, it would have run longer than the 100 or so performances it ran... Second... The Wild Party on Broadway WAS quite edgy and was so in a way it wouldn't have been if George C. Wolfe hadn't been involved... I'll agree that the choreography left quite a bit to be desired but... George C. Wolfe's direction was edgy and at points, quite inspired. Don't sell short the artists we still have working to indulge in nostalgia for those that have passed. It's insulting to both.

I'm not so sure he would find work if he were still around today. Sad to say, but look at Jerry Herman. He has written some wonderful scores ("Hello Dolly", "La Cage", "Mack and Mabel", "Mame", "Dear World"), but nothing on Broadway since "La Cage" back in the 80's. Who is to say the same thing wouldn't have happened to Fosse or Gower Champion or any of the other greats? Sometimes I wonder if Ethel Merman would be given a chance to be a leading lady if she were a young actress just starting out today? I'm not so sure.

I didn't see it on Broadway, but me and my friend who I was discussing it just saw it in LA. I don't know what, if anything was changed. It's not that it wasn't an edgy show, but it never got under your skin the way it could have directed by Fosse. It’s like if Stanly Kubrick had directed Schindler's List instead of Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is a great director and he did a brilliant job with Schindler's List and as is it’s deeply emotional and disturbing, but if Kubrick had directed, it would affect you on a completely different level.
I actually think Fosse would be VERY proud of the Broadway revival.
Gwen Verdon has said she thinks he would've loved it, and who would know better than Gwen? She also admitted she thought it was better than the original production that Fosse created for her! Now that says something.
I think Ann Reinking did a fabulous job recreating his choreography. She kept the HOT HONEY RAG exact to his original. The only thing that changes is that the cartwheel is taken out for certain actresses.
The movie choreography looks shameful compared to Reinking's and Fosse's choreography. The only number in the movie that I think comes close to being better choreographed then it is in the stage show is - I CAN'T DO IT ALONE.
And you've got to be sick to compare Brooke Shields to Melanie Griffith as Roxie. Brooke actually performed Ann Reinking's choreography. Griffith just clapped her hands on beat, basically.
Brooke's Roxie monologue was the most unique I have ever seen in the role. She was fabulous.
