As has been stated, the walk from Foggy Bottom Metro Station (on the blue or yellow lines) isn't bad. Just go down the hill down New Hampshire Ave, and it's maybe a 10 minute walk. Very easy.
OR, cabs in DC are remarkably inexpensive compared to most US cities.
If you take Amtrak into DC (my personal choice), you can catch a cab right at Union Station to the KC and it'll cost you about 10-12.00. If you do opt for the bolt bus and arrive into Chinatown, a cab ride would cost you about 10 bucks, too.
The KC is kind of in the middle of, well, no where. It's just off the campus of George Washington University, but it's remarkably easy to get to from downtown DC.
For those recommending a walk rather than a shuttle ride between the KC and the Foggy Bottom Metro station - I just want to remind you that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginburg was mugged while walking from the Kennedy Center to the Watergate (just next door). It ain't necessarily the safest thing to do - at least once the show lets out. And those cabs are very pricey.

Re: Muggings.... Ridiculous. I've walked from KC to Foggy Bottom MANY times at night, and around the watergate. Never had a problem, seen anyone who might be suspicious.
One person gets mugged, and it's a high profile individual so it gets attention, and it becomes a big deal.
It's a safe area, right outside Georgetown and near the university campus. Well lit, well travelled.
It's a city tourboi and saying it's entirely safe is ridiculous. I've lived here my whole life and went to school in this area. This isn't the only time someone's been mugged. Grow up.

ljay889- If you are taking bolt, I would use the 10th and H stop. Walk to Metro Center from there (it's just 2 blocks or so and there is more than one entrance) and get on the blue or orange line to Foggy Bottom-GWU. You can also get on the train at Gallery Place-Chinatown (the same distance as Metro Center), but you'll have to switch at Metro Center anyway so there is really no point.
If you go to the Union Station stop, you'll have to take the red line a few stops to Metro Center and then change to the blue or orange line. It's more of a distance and hassle.
"Why do you care what people might say? Why try to fit into their design?" (Side Show)
Justice Ginsburg was mugged in 1996, for what it's worth, and DC has changed a bit since then. I've walked to the Metro at night and never felt unsafe. You walk on well-lit streets, and pass a few hotels and a GWU dining hall.
It really makes no difference whether you walk to the Metro or not, the shuttles are free and probably take the same amount of time. There are probably 4-5 that run in a loop before and after shows.
