although I was bored to tears and hate the music, I must say that Phantom is the most visually spectacular show IO've ever seen.
The Lion King
Starlight Express
Phantom
Mary Poppins
Sunset Boulevard
We Will Rock You
Three that immediately come to mind are the original productions of Follies, Sweeney Todd, and Passion. Of course, it depends on what you mean by spectacular.
Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme.
Thank God the sets were wonderful, the show left me cold however.
The Original LE Cage was absolutely amazing to me at the ripe old age of 11!

Visually and dramatically, Mary Poppins and Wicked were amazing.
Is the touring show of "Wicked" significantly different than the Broadway staging? The "Wicked" sets and special effects were far below the hype.
Disney seems to know how to do visuals!
Lion King
Beauty and the beast.
For pyrotechnics: Bombay Dreams
My favorite single effect is "Audrey II".

I'm not sure about the Broadway show but the touring version of Wicked has an amazing set and along with the lighting it makes for a wonderful spectical.

My first thought was 42nd Street, but I absolutely agree with The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.
City of Angels
Barnum
Light in the Piazza
Tommy
Oh yeah Craig good one i forgot about City Of Angels.
I was surprised no one had listed that yet, but perhaps the people posting in this thread never saw it.

*looks up "City of Angels" on IBDB and is under the impression that this was the best show ever*
Seriously- super cast, great score, excellent book, stunning sets
I completely forgot about La Boheme. What a gorgeous musical. My fiance was bored to tears and took a nap but I loved it. Also the lighting in Light in the Piazza was gorgeous.
The Light in the Piazza was goregous. Such a beautiful set design and such wonderful costumes and lighting.

My first choice is THE WOMAN IN WHITE, those sets were awesome!
Also...MAN OF LA MANCHA revival had a really fascinating set.
WICKED was pretty amazing
CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG in London, that was incredible, I almost cried when the car flew.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE had some fantastic sets.
ANYTHING GOES in London, the ship set was really great and all the rooms popped out from underneath or were rolled on.

Best12BarS: You may be misquoting your Dad or was mistaken. I saw the original FANNY twice and while the score and performances were outstanding, I don't recollect anything special about the sets. They were good but nothing out of the ordinary for the time.
My list would be:
My Darlin' Aida
King of Hearts
Auntie Mame
Baker Street
Skyscraper
On the Twentieth Century
La Cage aux Folles (the original production)
Carrie
Carousel (The Lincoln Center revival)
Elaine Stritch at Liberty (with talent you don't need spectacle

OMG, how could I forget chitty chitty bang bang!? That was SUCH an amazing spectacle!!
and.. its funny so many people are critisizing wicked's sets and special effects and stuff.. I mean, granted sure the flying isn't anything that amazing, but I actually think it WORKS to make the flying more simple. Its just... with the lighting, and the power of Defying Gravity to begin with,I think it'd be doing too much to go much bigger with the flying. Just my opinion though :) but I mean, the rest of the show in general is just amazing, both set wise and lighting. The lighting really does make all the diffference in the world- especially in scenes like As Long As You're Mine. That is just like... wow.

Tarzan is not visually spectacular. It's the most un-original, uninspired design I've ever seen (although, the opening sequence...and ONLY the opening sequence, is brilliant). I don't see what makes Phantom so spectacular either. It's a bunch of drapes and a fake proscenium. It's gorgeous, no question, but hardly spectacular. It's just too simplistic (in a brilliant sort of way). I'd say Wicked, Show Boat, Cats, Miss Saigon and Sunset Boulevard are visually spectacular
