I think she's just 26, about my age. And yeah when I saw that someone said she was too old... I just about peed myself.
I mean, I'm not even 30 yet. And 30 isn't even old.
Although I guess from 16, 26 might look old. I don't know. Whatever, we're not old. And neither is Laura.
Anyhow, lots of people love this show, lots of people dislike it, I don't think any amount of "explaining" is going to change anyone's mind - nobody has ever talked me into liking something I don't like, or into NOT liking something that I enjoy. You either like it or you don't.

I loved Wedding Singer, and will continue going back as often as I can.
There are plenty of shows on broadway so that it caters to everyone's varied tastes. Some people prefer Sweeney Todd and History Boys, others (such as myself) prefer Wedding Singer and Tarzan.
It's great that there are so many different shows so that there is something that makes everyone happy.
Sorry you (original poster) didn't enjoy it, but there are plenty of other people who like it and certainly wouldn't wish for it to close!

Lea has the answer: "Anyhow, lots of people love this show, lots of people dislike it, I don't think any amount of "explaining" is going to change anyone's mind - nobody has ever talked me into liking something I don't like, or into NOT liking something that I enjoy. You either like it or you don't".

I have nothing wrong with your opinions, but I'd kind of like some examples of when she comes across bland or dry, because I just don't see it.
Anyway, on a chemistry note? The dumpster scene (when AWESOME is written) was pretty much improved by Stephen and Laura and they basically put it together themselves. That's what Laura told me. A truly adorable, funny, chemistry-filled scene if you ask me.
Everytime I've seen it (the 8 times so far...) the two of them have plenty of chemistry. Maybe far back you can't see it, but there is something in their eyes for that 2 and a half hours: pure joy.

Posted: 5/23/06 at 4:48pmWhen I saw The Wedding Singer, I sat in a box seat so I could see perfectly and Julia is supposed to be cute and bubbly something I didn't see in Laura. I trulley feel that Laura was miscast, voice, body type and all. She is gorgeous and skinny and Julia I felt was supposed to be really just a normal girl.

To each his own.
It's funny, Tiny-Toon, how some of these people think - I said how I feel and now I don't give a flying **** how you feel.
But in all honesty, what's wrong with this setup:
You say how you feel.
I say, that's okay, to each his own, but this is how I feel and why.
You say, that's cool, I see where you're coming from, but I disagree.
Well, let's agree to disagree and there's nothing wrong with it!
Oh. Right. No one on here was raised with any friggin manners.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 10:02amI, for one like the Wedding Singer. The show is just fun. I admit, the book isn't all that hot and the chemistry b/w Robbie and Julia doesn't shine. Most of the jokes if not taken directly from the movie, like the cd player, weren't that funny or clever since they used the most obvious 80's references that come to mind...for example the McRib comment and the beginning of cell phones. Also, the rapping Grandma has been in the movie, it was cute, we laughed, but the whole deal with her in the show is overdone. I would have much rather have had George's fun "50 Years" song turned into a musical number. Anyone else agree? I did like how they developed George's character from the movie. The score is great though. A lot of people are downing the music, but I think that's the show's strongest asset. I still think Laura singing "Right On Time" and its sequence was her best moment in the show which, of course they cut in previews. The direction is similar in "Someday", but not nearly a standout.

At first I loved Right on Time and hated Someday, but now I totally love Someday, it's become one of my favorites songs in the show.
And nycboi, "I, for one like the Wedding Singer", you aren't the only one! I'm going tonight for my 7th time and can't wait!

Posted: 5/24/06 at 11:02amWow, I am shocked that Laura Benati is only 26 or 27 - I always thought she was in her late 30s, especially after seeing her on "Starved" (which by the way was a BRILLIANT show).

Posted: 5/24/06 at 11:07amliotte, I think you maybe right about "Someday", I really do need to give it a chance...and I'm glad others like the show. liotte I know you posted before about Laura saying that Right on Time and I Wonder were going to be available whether on the cd or itunes, I'm just curious how you found out and if you think its legit? I am still curious if anyone else thinks that George's "50 years" should have been a real song ?

Posted: 5/24/06 at 11:12amFirst of all, I don't think anyone should wish a show would close. Think about it if the shoe were on the other foot. Say you were Amy Spanger reading this thread. Would you like it if people were saying such things about you? I also think that this show has some extent of popularity amongst young audiences like myself (although I didn't see it, now wishing I had) and I think before anyone judges a show, they should see it, because I think that not most, but SOME of the people on here who say a show is 'bad' or 'disgusting' have not seen it, and are just going along with the critics.

Ok first of all, broadwaybaby, when I said not to post your opinions in a thread that has NOTHING to do with opinions.. I didn't mean go start yet ANOTHER Wedding Singer Sucks thread..
Also.. you named the thread "please explain why you like The Wedding Singer, i dont get it" ... then we give our opinions and you basically say that our opinions don't matter, the show needs to close and that you're finished arguing about it.
Honestly... what was the point of this thread?
I like the Wedding Singer. It's not life-changing theatre, it's NOT a disgrace to musical theatre, it's just FUN. And as long as people like it, it will stay open. I'm sorry but you will have to deal with that, as awful as that may be for you. And as it's been said many times already.. if you don't like it, don't see it.

Why do WS defenders always go with the "it's not high art, it's not life-changing, it's just fun!" tack? As if Drowsy or Jersey or TCP are life-changing high art?
You wanna change your life, read a book or go to church or make some new friends. I go to comedies to laugh.

I found THE DROWSY CHAPERONE to be high art. I was actually incredibly moved by it by my strong connection with THE MAN IN THE CHAIR. This show really hits home for lovers of musical theater.
THE WEDDING SINGER is fun. It doesn't have to be high art and it doesn't CLAIM to be high art. It bills itself as a fun, 80's romp. So, if they succeeded in doing so, what's so wrong there?

Posted: 5/24/06 at 12:35pmIt bills itself as "The Wedding Singer, A New Musical". Anything else is just conventional wisdom echoing around the media/internet echo chamber.

I love how people don't like a show, and say how it should clsoe and all of the stuff THEY would do to make it better.
When you get your own show, you make it how you'd like. Until then, there's really nothing you can do about it.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 5:04pmWhat I don't get is why is there a need for this type of thread? It's impossible for every single person to love a show. Let it be what it is. If you don't like it, that's fine..nobody is forcing you to, so why do you need to go and trash it? There are plenty of people who do like it, and nothing is coming out of a thread like this.

Posted: 7/4/06 at 2:30amI don't know about the show itself, but I LOVE the CD and have listened to it again and again. If only I could take over the role for Laura B! Maybe someday?
