If there is a Broadway legend that should win a Tony, that would be Julie Andrews, who has never been recognized, and is a much bigger star by the way.

But Julie Andrews isn't playing a featured role in a musical this season. Should we just give her that award because? And what does the fact that you think she's a much bigger star have to do with anything?

You think it was a WRONG opinion, so be it and I know you are not alone but not everyone loves everyone the way everyone else does. I applaud muscle for not loving Angela because he/she is told to and because so many people (including myself) think she is legendary.

An opinion would be, "Angela Lansbury is just ok in Night Music." As cockamamie a statement as that is, I can accept that as an opinion. However, stating that she can't sing is just factually incorrect. Lauren Bacall can't sing, Lansbury certainly can.

The lack of respect that some people on here have for a legendary performer is quite frightening.

I just want to chime in and say that I agree with adamgreer's posts in this thread.

Some of what I've read here is cringeworthy...how did a PROMISES review thread turn into Angela Lansbury bashing??? She is possibly the greatest stage performer ever and she will win the Tony Award this season for NIGHT MUSIC. It both shocks and disappoints me that anyone would suggest otherwise.

well adam i guess to me it is an opinion because there are people i say that about like taylor swift and i get lambasted all over the place from her die hard fans. okay, i know we cannot compare angela to taylor but i am just meaning that is my opinion of her,(taylor) and there are millions who think she is brilliant. that's all i meant. i get really pissy when people put down someone i think is brilliant.

it is your truth and your fact, yes. i happen to agree with you along with most.

this is going to be heated on tony night in this category. i truly don't think angela is a shoe in. we will see.

Well, evidently, this person posts false statements, because he seems to post a lot for "not having interest"
Look, it's just an opinion, just like you say that "N2N" is a better show than "ROA", I mean, maybe it is, but who are you to say what show is better? It's your opinion. Well, that is my opinion. Anyways, feel free to post Lasbury's vocal range and the notes she can hit, and maybe I will change my mind. Feel free to post youtube links too. I just heard a few songs by her(including her in ALNM) and I was underwhelmed with her singing, just like I am with Taylor Swift's singing. So Piper, I'm with you on that one!

Singing (espsecially in the theatre) is NOT about having perfect pitch and belting.

In musical theatre, it's about conveying message, meaning, and emotion through song. Which Lansbury does almost better than anyone ever.

Hopefully these clips will put to rest your ridiculous assertions that she can't sing.

Oh, and of course, the point you overlook with your bizarre Night Music statements is that she is playing a role that was originally written for a NON-SINGER.

I agree 100%.

and adamgreer, thank you for posting those links. Seeing and hearing Angela in the original production of MAME is a real treat. She is perfection (and an incredible singer to boot!)

rOcKS @ 'Promises, Promises'

^ i agree with that too. to believe a song it has to be conveyed with truth on all points. the exceptional singing is a plus.

Angela singing Thoroughly Modern Millie = amazing! She would have been a great Muzzie.

I agree with that too, yet, I wouldn't say that Glenn Close is a great singer. She is terrific, but not a great singer. Do I prefer her Norma Desmond over Lupone's? Absolutely, but I won't say that she has the best vocal range. Ok, I have yet to watch those clips. Which one should I watch 1st? I wanna watch just one or two.

I picked to watch "Beauty and the Beast", I think Celine Dion(I'm not her biggest fan either) sings it way better.
She is a good actress, but def not the best singer, she sings on the same key all the time basically. Anyways, just to make you happy "she can sing"! Hopefully now you will have interest in my posts, LOL!
And remember, what I think it's just an opinion, it's ok to disagree too.

Patti's vocal abilities and interpretation of the songs in SUNSET BOULEVARD are far superior to Glenn's. But so are Donna's compared to Brooke and Chita's compared to Vanessa.

Picking to watch one clip out of the eleven that adamgreer posted and base your opinion solely on a single clip doesn't really prove anything. He posted eleven clips of Lansbury singing to show her vocal range and abilities.

(I've said this before and I will say it again: muscle23ftl just likes to cause controversy)

rOcKS @ 'Promises, Promises'

And of course, the one clip you pick is a song that is sung almost entirely in her lower register.

A few weeks ago he started a thread saying "I disagree with everyone when it comes to ALL ABOUT ME" stating that he enjoyed Michael Feinstein and the stage manager, but hated Dame Edna (while the general consensus on the show was that Dame Edna was the best thing about the show, and if she had her own show, it would have been a hit).

In another thread, he also stated that Matthew Modine was the star of THE MIRACLE WORKER and should have gotten top billing.

Clearly, causing controversy is his thing...

Clearly he succeeds at it if given the kind of hateful comments he provoked on this thread.

Oh please, give me a break and get off your high horse.

I've seen all of the possible Featured Actress contenders, and I believe Lansbury is easily giving the best performance. Yes, I found her better than Finneran. Maybe Finneran has improved, but I was not blown away by her.

Thanks Piper for sticking up for me! You are one cool girl!
Ray, I loved your statement "Oh please, give me a break and get off your high horse", he is on one very delusional horse by the way, LOL!
WAT, you're too much! Still a great friend though!

Finneran was certainly a highlight of PROMISES and she gave an excellent performance, but I do think that Angela is giving a superior performance in NIGHT MUSIC (have seen ALNM twice so far and PP only once).

Terri White was a highlight of FINIAN'S, and may get nominated, but will not win.

Apologies if I seem a bit forceful in this thread, but the Angela bashing brings out the worst in me. The woman is perfection and I would do anything to defend her honor.

rOcKS @ 'Promises, Promises'

This is giving me a headache.

I loved Lansbury in NIGHT MUSIC and think she's obviously one of the greatest stage actresses who has ever lived. I have absolutely NO problem with her taking the Tony this year. At all. She's wonderful in the show and she's a legend. I just really loved Finneran's performance as well.
