Before you do anything else, including breathe or pee, you must read this: https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=858987

Also, I realize that it's a holiday weekend, but please don't drink and post.

I'm pretty sure it's been passed from director to director over time. I know there were some rumors about Tim Burton directing it, with Johnny Depp playing Sweeney, but I don't know the validity of it.

On IMDB, it says that there's a Sweeney movie slotted for 2008, directed by Tim Burton, and that it's in pre-production, but it has no info about a cast or anything. Apparently Sam Mendes was originally set to direct it. *shrug*

It'd be interesting to see what they'd do with it. I'd like to see what Tim could do for it, but I'm not sure I'm so keen on having Johnny Depp play Sweeney. I love Johnny, but I'm not sure how he'd do in the part.

I'm pulling for Christopher Walken, myself. I know he's had a theatre background, and can sing...I think it'd be interesting to see his rendition of Sweeney.

There are approximately 40,000 threads on this (okay, like 3, but still) including a brand new one that was posted within the last two days. This topic has been talked to death until some new info is released.

Burton and Depp are more-or-less set, I believe.

It has Sondheim's blessing.

I had heard awhile ago that Burton was set and that he was trying to persuade Johnny into doing it. There was also talk of the film that Burton was going to work on next being pushed back so that they could get started with Sweeney.

I think Burton will be great for Sweeney. I'm not too sure about Johnny. Can he sing? I really hope it's not dubbed. I'm more worried about who we'll get as lovett though. That should be interesting...

matt schneider, don't let people on these boards get you down. There are a few posters on here that get unreasonably obnxious about certain posts (when in fact if the posts really did bother them them should just ignore them.) Don't let their comments intimidate you from asking questions.

Um Adam Chris? I agree that some people let things get to them on here that they shouldn't - but to say "they should just ignore them" comes off as INCREDIBLY pretentious.

Should I have ignored that? Maybe.

Will you ignore me?

I won't! I think that it goes both ways. Sometimes it is best to just ignore the post, especially if you only have a snide bitchy comment about it. If you have something to add or contradict then, hey why not post. But this kid has had a lot of very rude and unnecessary comments thrown his way in the short time he has been on the boards. Remember that this is a place for anyone interested in theater. If having a young fan who may not be very informed posting here is really that upsetting to people, then they should just ignore the post or find a place for more mature theater snobs to post and not have to deal with it.

Knowing Burton, it'll probably be Helena Bonham Carter.

I can see Carter as Lovett physically....I don't know if she can sing it. Then again, I don't know if Depp can sing it either.

I'm not sure if he can. A lot of people bring up the "Oh, well he sang in Cry Baby!" argument, but they don't realize he was dubbed. Sweeney is HARD. Lovett is HARD. They can act it, but you can't just half-ass the singing.

Exactly - and I THINK I read somewhere that Depp said that if he can't do justice to the singing he won't do it - but maybe I just imagined that.

I hope that's the case. The tiniest, sanest bit of me is still holding on to Russell Crowe as Sweeney. I think I'm the only one.

And after seeing Walk the Line, I think it'd be interesting to see Joaquin Phoenix in the role as well.

Johnny Depp would do a wonderful job ACTING Sweeney. Singing? Not so much.

Joaquin Phoenix would be a little young for the part, in my mind. But that would certainly be interesting.

Nothing makeup couldn't fix. I don't know. All I know is that movie musicals never go the way I want them to. =[

Sondheim has said re: singing in Sweeney: "I think, of Sweeney Todd.... That show can be forcefully delivered, I don't think you have to sing it as well" and having seen very good actors, who were less than perfect singers play the part, I'd certainly agree.

Moreover, film is a different medium and has a set of different demands - Sondheim has already said that the more reflective numbers will probably be gone from the movie as they become redundant in film - in Sweeney's case these might mean that the more vocally challenging will no longer be there. In that case, Depp becomes a stronger suitor for the role.

BTW - aren't all actors in a musical film dubbed?

I meant he was dubbed using a different singer.

I see Russell Crowe more as Jean Valjean than I see him as Sweeney Todd.
