i've been wanting to write a play/musical for some time now and i've finally started to commit, except i've been scratching my brain and i can't think of a concrete plot. preferably something sad, and something i can have fun with when concerning the backstage elements. also preferably at least a little school appropriate, something that doesnt need a huge budget, and an idea that is translatable to the stage. thanks !!

I promise you this isn't snarky.

If you are passionate about writing, the idea needs to come from you.  YOU have to care about it, want to explore it, and want to live with it for a while.  You need to be sparked by the idea...then all the rest (the tone, the tech, the appropriateness) will come.

Script writing is perhaps the most difficult medium - writing in all dialogue is HAAAAARRRD.

Best of luck to your endeavor.

I wanna see Shrek fight a robot, and then Frankenstein and Wolfman dance WAP at curtain call.

A sequel to CHICAGO. What happens to Roxie and Velma after CHICAGO ends? Do they both go into movies? Velma a rival to Ruby Keeler and Ginger Rogers?

What sad things would you be happy to write about?

Agreed with drama mama. Although as a writer I do love a prompt to get the mind going.

I can't wait to see what ideas sprout out of this pandemic. Perhaps the next theatrical masterpiece is being written right now and we don't even know it.

I agree with Dramamama, you’re going to be spending A LOT of time with these characters and this plot and all the research that comes with it so it needs to be something that you feel absolutely committed to. Watch lots of movies and TV shows set across multiple time periods and think about every character and when you think of a question about the plot, write it down and explore it. You’d be amazed how often you find inspiration by questioning things that movies/TV shows don’t show.

Also, when you DO find inspiration and something you want to write about don’t tell anyone about it until it’s a fully realised idea. The amount of times friends of mine have been put off writing shows because others have said “that’s a silly idea”. The most ridiculous idea has potential. Friends of mine wrote a musical set in a Breakfast Cereal Bar during the London riots and it ended up being chosen to be workshopped at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Other Palace. So DON’T tell other people and full commit to your idea.
