Posted: 2/21/05 at 5:05amI don't know how you are basing things, but the version I am listening to right now is not bad. If you are comparing to the cast recording then yes she is off key but that is because it is in a different key. It is kind of weird that she is jumping all over the place with her tone, but it really isn't bad for an acoustic. But that is just my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 11:34amThis acousitic version of Defying Gravity was sung WAY before Wicked ever was performed live. She ,ust have never really had alot of practice with it. Idina at her concert was introducing the show to her fans so that they would go see her. The concert was in early 2003 or 2002 or something, while Wicked premiered in SF in May 03 and NY in October 03. I have heard many versions of her singing Defying Gravity and can totally back up the fact that she blew the audience out of the theater everytime.

I love Idina and all but this doesn't show off how great she can be...

The thing with Idina is.. she really CAN sing.
Just sometimes she just tries doing all these riffs and crap and just ruins the performance.

Actually, FabalaYero85, the clip everyone here is referring to, was recorded at Idina's recent concert at Zipper Theatre in the Fall of 2004. As this was the case, Idina had been singing the
traditionally known version of Defy Gravity for over a year at the Gershwin. She also wasn't the one who first sung the song, as was written- that would be Stephanie J. Block.
That said, the clip is not bad- its just different.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 1:47pmActually the clip of her I listened to has been on my computer since the summer of 2004. I think there are two different clips being compared here.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 8:20pmthe version from her concert at the zipper really didn't seem as bad as it's being made out to be. i was there and don't remember it being this unbelievably horrible moment.
#43re: wicked and idina
Posted: 2/22/05 at 9:12pmI didn't think it was bad either. There seems to be a bandwagon mentality on this thread. I've listened to the Zipper version a bunch of times and while Idina does have a hard time catching her breath in a couple of spots, overall I think it was fine. I actually even liked the acoustic vibe of it. Also, listen to the rest of that concert performance, she really sings a lot of different genres of music and does them all really, really well.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 10:09pmI listened to the clip from the Zipper and it really isn't that bad. It is just different. I actually really liked it at some points. I like the real version better, obviously, but from what people were saying, I thought I would be wincing in pain or something. It is not that bad.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 10:22pmNow I would love to hear Stephanie Block do it, but I won't get to see the tour...Her website has clips of her singing, but now Wicked. Maybe some will get put up at some point.

She was under pressure performing infront of all the other actors from different shows. You'd be a wreck as well. She did hit the notes although they were a little shakey at times. back off and give her a break.

I just listened to it. It was so, so horrible. I can't beleive this is the same person on the Rent recording that I thought was so amazing.
"She has got to be one of the most inconsistant performers I have ever encountered."
Amen to that!
Her voice teacher should be shot for letting her yell like that. The sad thing is, I think she has a good voice, but screaming like that is going to ruin her voice forever. Screaming is not belting and I wish someone would tell her that and find her a new teacher.
Her Tony performance was a disgrace. She was off pitch the entire song and her breathing was so uncontrolled. I guess it gives me hope that if someone can scream, sing off pitch and have no grasp of the basic fundementals of singing and be ADORED for it, there is hope that I can someday be on Broadway too.
Let the flaming begin.

If you shoot her voice teacher, every lead on B'way will be out of a teacher.
This version of Defying Gravity made me laugh SO hard. It's really inexcusable for someone to sound like THAT, especially given how many times she had sang that song, and also given it was her CONCERT and people paid good money specifically to see her.
I have to say "Not A Day Goes By" is even WORSE. Seriously.
