When is the last new Broadway show that made significant changes out of town?
The system is broken.
What would Wicked be without their time in San Francisco?

Ugh, this show could last a while if it's a vanity project being used as a backdrop for a reality show, which I believe is the synopsis of season 3 of The Comeback. Maybe HBO is thinking cross promotion?
TBH, the drama and heartbreak of living through a Broadway flop could make for compelling TV.

This story could work as a musical if it followed the Gypsy framework. A fable about a delusional, amoral, selfish, real-life woman used as a metaphor about a major shift in American culture.
Just imagine how awful Gypsy would have been if it had been produced by Rose Hovi

I had to read this thread to see how long it was before someone mentioned Stephen Schwartz. 29… not bad. So weird that he’s becoming almost an afterthought in all of this. If he’s not top of mind with this show, it’s no wonder interest is low to skeptical.
Do the producers really think people care about Jackie Sieg

100%. My intent was to explore why Schwartz isn’t an above the title name (in the context of QoV marketing) despite his past success and obvious talents as a theatre artist. How has he not won a Tony for best original score? My thinking is that his ability to write scores that serve the story and production means he’s never become a known entity on its own. His scores highlight the product

Welp. To answer my own question, Stephen Schwartz already achieved this impressive milestone in his twenties, when Godspell, Pippin, and The Magic Show were all playing in New York. 1970's Broadw

I'd argue that description fits almost all of Schwartz's oeuvre. It takes sophisticated musical direction and storytelling to make his scores palatable.
Godspell is the most overproduced of his shows, so it's the most obvious offender. When a production can tap into an organic vibe and uses stripped-down arrangements, the show is revelatory.

I fail to see how his Broadway record could be "spotty". I think "Children of Eden" is the only show of his (not counting his opera) that can be counted a failure. The rest have been modest to huge stage hits. And his films have been success

With both Cats and Phantom running for so long, ALW hit this milestone several times over.
Schwartz doesn’t haven’t the name recognition or clout of ALW or Sondheim (though arguably Sondheim didn’t until after his death).

His titles are much more famous than his own name; Godspell, Pippin, Pocahontas, Prince of Egypt, Wicked. It really should be a bigger deal that someone of his pedigree is debuting a new score on Broadway; instead, it's shrugs."

Is this in bad taste? Shutdown sale Oct 2

Promoting the shutdown with AI slop of Jeffries and Schumer in stereotypical Mexican costumes is in bad taste.
This is just standard marketing, if a bit hand fisted.

Thanks for that pushback and deeper analysis. I’m a huge fan of the original documentary and have been dreading just how much this show will miss the point. Your reaction gives me hope.
Perhaps Assassins isn’t the best comp for my concerns. Is this more like Great Gatsby where they bury and/or totally miss the social criticism of the source material to make the lead more likable?
