Adaptions You'd Like To See Happen on Stage Jun 19

I'd love to see Dave Malloy tackle Gatsby. After reading the book a year ago, I envisioned it as sort of what he did with Great Comet. Make the score more electro/alt pop and use the orchestrations to harken back to the era (use a stand up bass, brass ensemble, jazz clarinet etc.). Make the story more relevant to today, how we aren't learning about the dangers of pure capitalism. I'd also love to see what Kitt and Yorkey, JRB, or Jeanine Tesori could do with a chamber musical adap

re: The Official 'Bad High School Productions on YouTube' Megathread Apr 16
2017, 05:04:18 PM
This past year my school did a fall play of Cuckoo's Nest. It was very untraditional with some of the patients being genderbent to eliminate the theme of men vs. women and turn it into the opression of outsiders in society, the elimination of all the f-bombs as we are a public school, and she shifted the focus of the show from McMurphey to Bromden through the staging and incidental music. We got it adjudicated for State festival. They maligned us. The adjudicators accused our director of "evicerating" the script by the elimination of some of the language, said that our Ratched was unbelievable as "small, pretty girls" can't portray power and dominance, and that the "only" people in the cast that were good were McMurphey, Bromden, and Billy (who they did love). Another production got adjudicated and went to States. They too took out much of the language and had a "small, pretty girl" play Ratched. They don't gender-bend. Ironically, neither productions were better or worse, just that each had completely different interpretations. Even though it was a very disappointing experience, we aren't (that :) ) bitter and are still proud of what we did. We love our production, interpretation, set and would never change it. Here's a picture of our set before the show started: https://goo.gl/photos/djomCuMJDGEafycdA

Musicals for High Schools! Apr 27
2015, 08:45:14 PM
While it doesn't perfectly fit all of the criteria, Mary Poppins could be a possibility. It just came out for licensing and it very popular with high schools. In fact, my hs did the show and it went wonderfully! I do also think it could be The King and I.

Which is worse: Once or Violet? Oct 4
2014, 07:19:28 PM
I did not see Violet, but saw the US tour of Once and was enthralled by it. Was really moved and am so happy that it won the tony for best musical. It has it's flaws, but it is still a great show and us infinitely better than many other shows that are or were on Broadway (In the Heights, Lion King, Billy Elliot)
