Hi All:
Just re-watched Lincoln Center's program of South Pacific with Kelli O'Hara and Danny Burstein last night and was soooooo grateful this was professionally recorded and preserved. A lot of you are in and around the industry and the issue of recording and selling cast performances has been around a long time.
Is there any movement toward capturing and broadcasting/selling more OBC cast performances?
What are your favorite pro-shot versions of musicals?

are there any plans to film the new version of The King and I?
Yes, PBS will broadcast it. I'm told it's been the plan since day one.

It's not my favorite musical, but I thought the MTV recording of Legally Blonde was pretty great quality!
Sweeney Todd in the 1982 tour! It's wonderful!
I might be mistaken, but there is also a private pro-shot copy of La Cage Aux Folles from the original 1983 production. It shows the sets being assembled and there's also footage from the wings.
Into The woods. I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned.

Anyone have a link to watch Piazza??
Bilbo/broadway guy (aka a thousand other screen names who've relentlessly trolled people on this board for years now, who is now trying to be "a good wittle boy who wuvs everyone") has me "blocked" so he couldn't see that. I mean, because I'm blocked. So, like Roxy, he has no idea when I post anything except when I post it and he sees it because he "blocked" me.

I agree about Into the Woods (again, obviously) and Legally Blonde. I didn't think South Pacific translated as well on video.
I'd also like to see Piazza. Does anyone know where it's posted/where I can purchase it?
How many of these were single performances, though?
I thought Into The Woods mixed performances in front of an audience but also an empty theatre.
Legally Blonde edited together a couple of performances.
Light in the Piazza was "live from lincoln ceneter" so it was a one and done recording.
I don't know about Sweeney Todd or Passing Strange.

Surely someone has a link to Piazza or a download?

Into the Woods
Sunday in the Park with George
Sweeney Todd 1982
Company revival with Raul Esparza
Passion
These are all WONDERFUL pro shot versions of Sondheim's musicals and it is such an incredible thing PBS decided to capture these unparalleled performances
As for Into the Woods, I would literally watch that OBC recording in a movie theatre and I'm sure I'm not alone on that.
Absolutely Passing Strange
I think Spike Lee should film any musical he wants (just think how his Rent would have turned out...)
Edit: I believe that Passing Strange was filmed over 3 performances with an audience and one performance without an audience (for close-ups), to answer a previous question.

The Light in the Piazza for me, as well. It's heartbreaking that it seems to have been taken off of YouTube now, that's how I watched it quite a few times and introduced it to friends. I wish there was some easier way to access it.
I like the video release of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE probably most.
