The Current State of Broadway in 2025 Sep 9

"Broadway's last true season"?! GIRL!
The grosses were abysmal its true. But they always have been for this week after Labor Day. Tourists just aren't in the city much since its back to school and they already did their "last big summer travel" over Labor Day weekend. This is especially true for families (see: the huge drop for a family show like Aladdin). This year appears a bit worse than normal because grosses for the previous week were higher this year t

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/7/25 Sep 9
2025, 03:25:46 PM
Worst numbers we've seen in a long while.
Unless they have some kind of stunt casting coup up their sleeve, I think both & Juliet and Hell's Kitchen will wrap it up this winter. Their overall grosses have been trending downward, so they have less opportunity to make up for disastrous weeks like this. I'm surprised we haven't seen more ex-boy band members in & Juliet, but I'm sure casting is asking and maybe those guys just aren't interested. <

What would you love to see adapted as a musical? Aug 26
2025, 04:33:21 PM
Troop Beverly Hills
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (except with an original score)
It's a Wonderful Life
The Shining (get really creative and bold with staging. We need more horror musicals)
The First Wives Club

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/24/25 Aug 26

I did not think Cabaret could fall any further. But WOW. There are also several performances this week being heavily papered. So expect similar or worse grosses next Tuesday. Perhaps everyone is buying bucketloads of drinks during the pre-show since their tickets are free? I don't know why else to entertain keeping it open through October.
I believe Purpose has already recouped, they just haven't announced it. I don't know about John Proctor, but I have to imagine tha

Gun & Powder at Paper Mill Aug 25

Ok after pouring over the language in her filing, I think Renee has a valid case. BUT what she wants out of it is absolutely insane and never going to happen.
If everything in the filing is truthful, then it seems plainly clear that producers did not offer her the chance to "cure" the issues that would have allowed them to not move forward with her. Instead they continued to hire and pay her for events and demo recordings. When asked why she wasn't being given a Broadway

'CATS: The Jellicle Ball' at PAC reviews Aug 13

I cannot fathom how they would make their setup work for the Broadhurst. But then again, no Broadway house fits this one perfectly, even with a reconfiguration.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/10/25 Aug 12

There is no set formula to announcing a recoupment. And it involves a variety of factors.
First off, there is no rule saying that shows must make such an announcement. And indeed, many do not. It used to feel like tradition to make this announcement, but the landscape has shifted in recent years. There is a growing trend among limited run shows to announce recoupment at the end of the run. Open ended musicals are more likely to announce closer to when the actual recoupment happen

To an above question, I believe Purpose has already recouped. They just haven't announced it yet.
The only show with a worse average ticket price than Cabaret is Jeff Ross!? LOL. That is dire. There is no financial reason for this show to make it to October. But considering the producers were crazy enough to extend it that far with this cast in the first place, I think they might just be crazy enough to keep it open until the announced date. Perhaps they have accepted that th

Encores! 2026 Update? Aug 12

Regarding the La Cage questions above, I received City Center's brochure the other day and the book for La Cage is credited to Harvey Fierstein. So apparently they are marrying the original orchestrations with the revised book.

Is the migrant crisis affecting Broadway? Aug 11
2025, 03:25:16 PM
Of COURSE it was only a matter of time until BroadwayFlash (or excuse me..."Everything Bagel" *eye roll*) revived the racist thread on migrants that they started years ago. It's all so predictable and all so despicable.

Rocky Horror Show Revival Cas Aug 11
2025, 01:58:42 PM
I cannot begin to express how much I detest the idea of Chalamet as Frank. I'd love for this revival to knock me out to the point where I have to revisit it at least once a month. But I do not want to buy a single ticket to see Chalamet do this. Love him in Dune (thought he should have gotten an Oscar nom for part 2). Love him in Call Me By Your Name. But I would be hard pressed to think of an actor less suited to this role. Hard pass for me. And can we PLEASE just make this revival

2025-2026 Musicals to Be Announced Aug 8
2025, 01:57:02 PM
I can definitely see a successful narrative for Goddess. Especially in a less crowded season where it has more breathing room. I found a lot to love in this show, and if it can be refined a bit, I think it will truly be something special.
I should note that multiple people have confided in me that it has been harder than ever to secure funding for new musicals. This is the main reason why so few announcements have been made. The usual investor pool seems to be in a period of "pull

2025-2026 Musicals to Be Announced Aug 8
2025, 01:05:44 PM
From conversations I've had with various producers and industry folks:
Wanted, Dolly, and Benjamin Button are 100% done deals for this season.
The producers of Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil are actively working to come in this season but are having issues with theaters and funding. Cats will figure it out...I am highly skeptical that Midnight manages to get its finances in order for this season.

Rocky Horror Show Revival Cast Aug 8
2025, 12:50:14 PM
Lots of good ideas here. Cheyenne Jackson would make a GREAT Frank and he did recently star in Pinkleton's La Cage. I'd pay to see it! There was an (unsubstantiated) rumor in past threads that someone at Roundabout wanted a Black Frank. And should that be the case, I think Sydney James Harcourt would be divine. Honestly there are SO many queer Broadway actors who could nail this, so as long as they don't go down the (imo far fetched and ridiculous rumor) route of Timothee Chalamet

New YouTube Video Attacks Broadway Bigshots Aug 7
2025, 01:21:46 PM
This guy makes some valid points about how the business is controlled, but then he consistently undermines his assertions by cherry-picking some data and by going off on tangents about things he personally hates (ie: why is he so mad at Chicago?)

Forbes: Where To Eat After A Broadway Show Aug 6
2025, 10:31:11 AM
Dear Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a "where to eat" list for the tourists. This is a perfect little roundup of places to make them feel a little adventurous without spoiling all the places that real New Yorkers will go after a show. For a second I was worried you would spoil our secret spots and have them become overrun. But this is perfect.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/3/25 Aug 5
2025, 01:53:56 PM
I know I've been doomsaying Cabaret ever since I saw the insane offer papers for this revival...but even I wouldn't have predicted that they would post a weekly gross this low. If they knew recoupment was out of the question, they should have just closed on a high with Orville and Eva. Billy's interviews and the released audio of I Don't Care Much seem to have had a decidedly negative impact...pretty brutal considering they are solely relying on him to sell tickets. At least i

Could the Ed Sullivan Theatre return to Broadway? Jul 29
2025, 02:25:44 PM
If it does become reintegrated as a Broadway house, I truly hope whoever ultimately owns and operates the space configures it as a flexible theater. We desperately NEED more unconventional Broadway houses.
Any show with unconventional staging must currently cross their fingers that Circle in the Square becomes available, though it's small maximum capacity makes it a financial no-go for so many productions, OR they embark on a costly gut renovation of an existing proscenium hou

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/27/25 Jul 29
2025, 01:51:17 PM
Is Cabaret truly going to continue to throw roughly $500K into the fire each week through the fall??? The decision to extend past Orville and Eva is truly a baffling one. I don't mean any disrespect to Marisha Wallace, who is by all accounts lovely and an incredible performer, but she simply isn't a name here that will sell tickets. Which means they are relying entirely on Billy Porter's name to sell the tickets. But we are quite removed from his golden period of Kinky Boots and P
