OH MARY! Replacement Casting Thread
 Feb 6 2025, 10:57:28 AM

Tituss is going to kill this. It's perfectly suited for him.

Dear producers: for future engagements, please get Amy Sedaris and Tracy Ullman on the line stat. They both have the brilliantly demented humor that Mary needs. I also think Bridgett Everett would be a wild choice that would get folks to buy tickets (perhaps you could stage a Somebody Somewhere reunion and have her alternate the role with Jeff Hiller).

MYSTIC PIZZA at Paper Mill Playhouse (Reviews)
 Feb 3 2025, 12:21:25 PM

If this insane Broadway rumor is true, I sincerely hope that the producers have full understanding that such a transfer is ONLY to make the show more appealing for licensing (aka the ability to advertise it as "from Broadway"). Because it has a snowflake's chance in hell at being financially successful.

The spring is filled with A List stars (George Clooney, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin, etc), meaningful IP (Stranger Thin

Auto tuned live performances
 Feb 3 2025, 11:14:47 AM

Actual live auto-tuning has not made its way to Broadway (yet).

But as Jorge says above, several musicals use what is referred to as "sweeteners" to beef up large ensemble numbers. Basically pre-recorded ensemble singing that plays underneath the live singing. These are used either because of moments of intense choreography where they don't want the vocal power to dip, or because the show has a small ensemble and they want to increase the vocal output a portion of a

The Outsiders Tour Contract - Where is the outrage?
 Jan 23 2025, 04:36:00 PM

I mean..."Conflict of Interest" is basically the John Gore Organization's entire business model when you get down to it.

And of course Equity needs to rethink the tier system for these tours. As a rule: if there is any way to short change actors, producers WILL use it to short change actors.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 1/12/25
 Jan 14 2025, 05:42:33 PM

I'd say A Wonderful World could potentially nab Tony nominations for Lead Actor (Iglehart), Lighting Design, Choreography...and maaaybe Costumes. But none of these categories feel like locks for the show, and none of them would have any impact on box office. There is no way it makes it into Best Musical, so there is really no reason for them to old out until then. Unfortunately, we've seen that the weekly ceiling for this show is about $730-750K. And that just isn't enough to supp

Tammy didn't even reach 50% capacity for it's final week. Yeesh.

Crossing my fingers that Maybe Happy Ending can hold steady. I don't know how it makes it past February, but damn does it deserve to.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/1/24

I don't think I can remember numbers as bad as Tammy Faye's. You've gotta feel for the cast. I've never seen such a resounding "we don't want this" from critics, usual theatergoers, and casual ticket buyers.

Elsewhere, some of these jumps in grosses from the previous week are INSANE. The Lion King picked up an extra $876K...a bump that is more than the entire weekly gross of some other struggling productions. And Elf's numbers show just how despe

I know. And as I mentioned, both she and Lambert have many more planned absences through the rest of their run. Unless the production can score an A-List casting coup, there is a high chance the production closes with these two. And at a truly staggering loss.

All I know is that this show has been discussed to no end on r/broadway as well as other blogsand the operating cost was revised from 680k to 540k last week both on there and elsewhere I saw it mentioned so I took it as gospel. I’ll take a look at w

The increase for Maybe Happy Ending makes me unspeakably happy. I don't know how much they've increased their advertising and pr budget to get there, but there is at least now some hope that this incredible show can have more of a life.

Average ticket price of $160 for Gypsy is nuts! It will be very interesting to see just how frontloaded this production is, or not.

Cabaret is really in trouble. If memory serves, they have only had one profitable week in the Adam/A

DEATH BECOMES HER Previews

Thank god we have a big giant musical comedy this season. I thought the show was just so FUN. While I'd still currently rank Maybe Happy Ending as the best new musical of the season thus far, this is easily #2 and great to have well made entertainment that doesn't take itself seriously, yet is expertly put together.

I thought Act 1 was perfect. Wonderful opening number that stuck in my head, Williams looking gorgeous and singing her face off. Hilty and Simard are hysterical obv

Tammy Faye closing on December 8!
 Nov 19 2024, 04:42:33 PM

Michael Cerveris says "there will be plenty to see later. All that matters is you have until December 8 to see us."

Ummm what more is there to say? It's one of the most misguided business decisions in recent Bway memory. They decided that because a show sold out a 325-seat house for 6 weeks with British audiences, that it would...for some reason...magically sell out the freaking Palace for an open ended run with a capitalization of $25 million with American audiences

Yeah, the U.S. is already pretty pathetic when it comes to funding the arts. I imagine said funding will continue to stay at its current low level. Of course, who knows what the years may bring.

Patti LuPone called a privileged, racially microaggressive bully by Hell's Kitchen cast member

I have never seen a single "issue" on Broadway so blown out of proportion.

And someone comparing posters on this board who point that out to Trump's "level of delusion" is a prime example of why social media is a terrible way to have meaningful conversation, and why folks don't take it seriously when actual forms of racism and/or oppression show rear their heads. Because there is no conversation, merely taking sides: one side MUST be right and the other MUST

A TKTS surcharge is baked into the ticket price you see at the booth. The amount varies depending on the venue (Off-Bway will be different from Bway for instance) and ticket price, so I'm not totally sure just how much they receive per ticket for a Broadway show. For Off-Broadway it's usually around $7-10 per ticket depending on the price point. I would assume it's about double that for Broadway. So the productions get the bulk of the profit.

Rachel Zegler & Kit Connor-led ROMEO + JULIET Previews
 Oct 23 2024, 05:38:55 PM

Perhaps my expectations were lowered based on some reports here but I actually enjoyed this.

Kit Connor is exceptional in this role. Incredibly captivating and charming, totally sells you that he's falling in love with this girl despite just meeting her. And a wonderful command of the language. I hope he continues to do Broadway. Gabby Beans is also exceptional. The flower bed reveal is fun and the balcony scene was basically perfect. I thought the concept of setting inside a sort

I assume that was to me, but I was indeed at the show last night. I would never blindly dismiss something I haven’t seen. The reason I said “plants” is because the With One Look standing O felt quite bizarre. And a group in the fifth row as well as pairs in I think the second row all stood together as if on Cue. It was o Lu a smattering of people who wound up standing. But the same group who lead that charge also appeared to be the first ones leading the second movement, and

Yes, the audience plants did indeed start several standing ovations. lol.

reviews for this are going to be EXTREMELY divided. Some raves, some Cabaret level hatchet jobs. I think it’s safe to say it will be the most polarizing production of the season. Revival is far from a done deal at the Tony Awards.

Count me in for Sydney James Harcourt as Frank. His jellicle ball costar Antwayn Hooper might be able to do something interesting with the role too.

Adam Lambert has GOT to be Riff Raff.

I think Brad and Jane might be parts that could be attractive to bigger stars. Jonathan Bailey could do Brad well. Maybe they could finally convince Anne Hathaway to come to Broadway for Janet.

I would also love to hear Bonnie Milligan demolish Columbia's verses. And speak
