Before anyone comes at me with some of the cynicism some of these boards/threads are known for, this "petition" (which has turned into a word with so many negative connotations to it) is from my perspective as a fan who was hoping that Jasmine, with roots also in Texas in her Broadway debut at 26 years old and having been recognized with so many awards and nominations this season, would have a primetime televised spot on the biggest award show for theatre and the industry so others like me and like her -- who want to see themselves represented -- would see themselves elevated and amplified and showcased... just like the first time I actually watched the awards live in 2008 when I saw the cast of In The Heights that represented my culture, then an incredibly iconic performance from Gypsy that fed my golden age theatre-loving young heart which reminded me of both ends of the classic and contemporary musical spectrum. So bear with me...

This petition may not do anything, if anything, it may just let CBS, The Tony Awards, etc. know that some of us do want to see even the simplest-staged performance that showcases Jasmine, who represents so many people, inside and outside the Broadhurst. And I'm aware it takes money or production value and contracts and unions and glam and tech and planning for these types of things to happen... I'm aware of that because of what happened last year with Stereophonic... and I'm aware because I have read these boards since I was 14 years old (hence my username) and grew up to become a working member of this community. And especially after seeing yesterday's announcement of which shows are being showcased, there is hopefully room for a spot for Jasmine Amy Rogers to represent BOOP!

I'm just coming at this with some help from friends and colleagues and a place of love from someone who just wanted to see someone have their Jennifer Holliday or Audra McDonald moment, especially this early in her career and with how much love she's been getting. I hope The Tony Awards telecast can share a little bit of that with her, especially because it was performances like those where she indubitably saw herself in them, too.

You do realize performances are funded by producers of shows? CBS doesn't give two rips about your petition. If the producers ponied up the cash, she'd be on the show.

She'll be there. Nominated. THAT is her representation.

I wish people would stop making assumptions and stating them like facts.

Jerry Mitchell has confirmed on social media it has nothing to do with Boop willing to pay - they have the money and the Tony Awards said no.

It's completely fair to have opinions on whether you want them to perform etc, but that's the discussion that's grounded in reality. Not this willing to pay business.

Interesting. Is there a recent example of them saying no to a show? Usually they want more performances, not less.

Great to hear, right? As much as some folks on here beg daily for shows that aren't their favorite to fail.

Wow, they won’t let Jasmine perform? That’s a shame because Boop is going to close soon, from what I’ve heard/seen/read she is doing excellent work and if she doesn’t perform it will definitely mean her performance and the show is likely going to become lost to history.

That said, wasn’t there a rule that Tony nominated best musicals get the slots? Sometimes they make exceptions but it isn’t a right as such.

Maybe they determined they only had airtime for two non-Best Musical nominees? RWHC and JIT are both performing, plus all the BM and Best Revival nominees, plus Hamilton, plus Broadway Inspirational Voices...and they have to do this thing that is actually giving out the awards...all in the allotted time. IF Boop asked for a slot and was turned down, it's likely because they just don't have time to feature every show with a major category nomination.

They simply don't have time to showcase every show. There's already more performances scheduled than last year's telecast. Now who knows the reasoning for picking RWHC over Boop but it is what it is. It's somewhat surprising there even are two performance from non musical or revival nominees but Just in Time was never in doubt to get a slot if there was one available so there's one spot left. They can't just add more performances, they have a set amount of time. Look at how they had to shoehorn an extremely short Stereophonic performance in last year after not originally planning for it.

With tourism down this year they probably don't want to fill the airtime with terrible shows that stop people from coming to New York.

That's why the big blow out to remind people that Hamilton still exists.

Surprised Lion King isn't (edited) being wheeled out as well.

I assume it's already been written so this is likely a pipe dream, but would be wonderful to have her perform in some way in the opening number. I wonder if in the future there would be a better way to showcase some of the performers who aren't nominated for Best Musical/Revival (I joked about a Jimmys-style medley on a discord server, but that idea is gaining more appeal in my mind...)

They don’t have time for every show . But what made them choose Just in Time, loved it btw. Jasmine and Groff are both nominees. It’s so political and makes no sense. How cool would it be to let all nominated shows perform a 30-45 second snippet. Spread the love. It’s possible.

It's obvious why they chose Just in Time - is that a real question? Most obviously Jonathan Groff is a Tony-award winning Star with a recognisable face and name and they are trying to convince people to watch the Tonys, which always struggle for ratings. He also is singing 'the great American songbook' that could be more tolerable to audiences than new work. 'Just in Time' is doing STELLAR business and will be open for an indefinite period of time so it's a good marketing spot for the show. Everyone wins.

On the other hand, 'Boop' features an unknown singing unknown material in a show that will likely be unknown after 4 weeks time and have no tickets to sell. I would love Jasmine to perform because of the strength of her performance and I love "Where I wanna be" and "Something to shout about" but the decision making is obvious and unambiguous if they were pitted against each other.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

The way some of yall are risking it all for a horrible show and a performer that will never know your name . She was nominated, that’s great! How much more do you want?

To the first point, it's already been answered but Groff is a bankable star singing a well known song (or songs). I think the reasoning is pretty obvious. A better question is why RWHC over Boop. That I don't know.

To the second point, they tried that in 2008 and it was super lame. They did very brief performances from the three new musicals currently running but not nominated (Little Mermaid, Young Frankenstein, A Catered Affair). It did not work well.

In the "LuPone on McDonald" thread you literally said this to another poster: "Honey, please keep talking, the lack of education is proving itself. You’re not even worth a debate." And now you're asking others to be less condescending?

Forgive my slight frustration and surprise that someone who can talk like this to others here seems to genuinely wonder why Jonathan Groff might have been picked over Jasmine to perform at the Tonys. However, at the very least of course I will and did the courtesy to explain why in a sincere way if it was a genuine question.
