Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/21/24

Tickled my ear and warmed my heart. But felt nothing in my d**k at all. This show is making me question my gayness.

THE GREAT GATSBY Opening Night Critics’ Reviews

Most of these critics agree this show is glitzy and FUN. Sometimes Glitz and Fun is all you want and need for an enjoyable night at the theater. I’m buying a ticket.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR 50th Anniversary Tour

Feb 20, 2023 — 6:28:58 AM

JCS is in my Top 5 favorite musicals so I’ve seen quite a few versions on Bway and tour. This IMO is the worst version I’ve seen. It felt so much smaller than the previous touring production. (Eq. vs Non-eq. maybe?) The cast was in good voice but most of them were just yelling and screaming. I understand it’s presented like a rock concert but without feeling and emotion, the songs just became loud noise. In all the versions I’ve seen, there’s always a romantic even sexual tension between Jesu...

Beautiful at La Mirada Theater

Feb 20, 2023 — 5:26:53 AM

If you love her music, you will love this show. I saw it on Bway and on tour and both were outstanding. Should have won best musical that year IMO. And La Mirada always puts up really professional productions that can compete with the big theaters like Pantages and Ahmanson. I saw what I think was the best version of Les Mis on that stage. I will definitely check this out.

Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY - News & Discussion Thread

My 10th time. Still getting chills. I’m appreciating the quality of Ansel’s voice and singing more and more. I like watching audience reactions now. There was this young teenage girl who was bawling, not just crying or sobbing, I mean just bawling her eyes out. She started right after Riff was stabbed. She would quiet down into sniffles and then would start all over again till the end . The other people in the theater pretty much reacted respectfully with knowing smiles (while wiping away tea...

Why do they have to show that in the theater? I miss the ARCLIGHT cinemas in LA. No commercials whatsoever , 3 previews max and no latecomers allowed (they try , anyway). A couple of extra bucks were so worth it.The film was terrific. While I didn't love Ansel, I thought he held his own. But the others? Wowza.Holy s**t! I litera...

I think that his performance was held back by his lack of vocal prowess. His performance wasn't bad per se, and the critics are overdoing it a bit. However, he absolutely cannot handle the vocal demands of the role.If someone dubbed for him, he'd have freed up himself to truly embody the part. This just highlights how difficult a role Tony is to cast. Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY - News & Discussion Thread

I’m enjoying reading all the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. One that struck me says “WSS is done being polite about what it’s really about…” then goes on to dissect all the socio-political issues that were merely hinted at or subjugated in the 1961 film but highlighted in this version including Anybody’s status as a trans man. This definitely has more depth and gravitas than the original. Loving it.

I’m surprised this did not get an R rating. If their previous collaboration on MUNICH is any indication, this WSS will have some borderline R violence and sensuality. There was a sex scene in Munich between Eric Bana and a female costar that sent even some critics clutching their pearls.

I do like this tiny exchange which I don't think was in the original musical or the 1961 film adaptation:Maria: You're not Puerto Rican.Tony: Is that okay?Maria: You tell me..."… and it looks like they didn’t kiss in the middle of the dance floor in view of everybody. It looks like they went...
