I'm surprised that Albin can actually discriminate one tune from another. He wears hearing aids in both ears and half the time the batteries are dead.

The number one best overture of all time is hands down from Gypsy. People actually stay reverently silent. An overture that has that power is amazing.
My other favorites are Nine, Tommy, Candide, Urinetown, and Merrily We Roll Along.

"On the Twentieth Century" has one of the greatest overtures ever. Listen to it and you'll agree. It does what every great overture should — get you excited about the show.

My favorite Overtures are

Anything Goes- the 1987 Revival of course. I love how it starts slower and increases in tempo. It creates energy for the show.

Phantom of the Opera- of course probably the most powerful Overture on Broadway.

Dance of the Vampires- almost as powerful as POTO

Kiss Me, Kate- I like how the "overture" was intermixed into the song "Another Openin' Another Show" It is sort of hidden within the opening song.

Have to agree with "POTO" and "DOTV". Both are very exciting.

Chicago
Cats

Chicago's overture is delightfully jazzy and I love how it ends right as "All That Jazz"'s vamp begins.

Cats because I love the eyes! And...all right...the music.
