"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
Conan O'Brien
Applause A Little Night Music Irma La Douce-like the music, want to see a production of it
"A birdcage I plan to hang. I'll get to that someday. A birdcage for a bird who flew away...Around the world."
"Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.
A "Purlie" revival with Anika Noni Rose as Lutibelle would be heaven.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
Purlie was DOA at Encores! ... with Anika Noni Rose as Lutiebelle. Not her fault though. That show needs to be played to the hilt, and the Encores! production was very muted and tame.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
I was unaware that Anika had played the role before Smaxie.
How was her "I Got Love"?

She sang it effortlessly, and sounded great. It didn't have the crazy abandon and ebullience of Melba Moore's version, but she did well with it. I seem to recall that "He Can Do It" was the number that really brought down the house at Encores.
EDIT: Found this review of the Encores Purlie from Ken Mandelbaum, archived on the Broadway.com site, which really outlines the problems of that particular production.
"Bye, Bye Birdie starring Raul Esparza" "Really? And as who?"
Albert of course.
""They're Playing Our Song" with Rosie O'Donnell and Nathan Lane."
HA! I would like to see a revival of the show.
"I'm tellin' you, the only times I really feel the presence of God are when I'm having sex and during a great Broadway musical." - Nathan Lane - Jeffrey
Isn't the rumor that Anika Noni Rose is going to star in the PORGY & BESS revival or is it just a rumor? I would love to see her as Deena in a DREAMGIRLS revival or just about anyone in any role to be honest.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
