A broadway actor's pay has seldom been tied into the financial success of a show....except for longevity.  You usually have to be a BIG name to have that in your contract.

 

this is the business model....the people at the top: producers, creators, ceo's, team owners  are the ones that reap the most benefit when financial success is at play.  They are also the ones that have the biggest risk.

I understand that I was just trying to put what somebody can get for the same amount of money in perspective. I can get a cruise that will be my hotel room for 7 days, feed me 24X7, plus provide live entertainment (obviously not the quality of Hamilton - lol). In addition, this money gives me access to a casino, fitness room and outdoor movie theater etc.

The Chicago sit-down opens in almost exactly 5 months. Stupid question - would prices for the Broadway production go down, or would the new production open around the same price range?

I highly doubt the prices on Broadway would change based on Chicago.

But the Broadway prices are certainly affecting Chicago.  Right now all the group sales are sold out, the single ticket sales haven't started yet, but you can get single tickets on the broker sites for prices starting at about $500 ea. So, probably a lot of the "group sales" went to ticket brokers who just turned around started selling them as single tickets on the broker sites.

Hip, hip hooray for the business model, and three cheers for the oodles of loot it realizes. Let's all now throw our hats in the air and sing hymns of praise to $995 ticket prices. And tomorrow, let's organize a celebratory parade for the top ten billionaires listed in Forbes.

 

As for those who feel discouraged at being priced out of tickets to the show, take it from one who endured it: you have received a blessing in disguise.

I still don't understand how much this deters scalpers. Sure, it cuts into the profits but there's still a profit to be made if the tickets are all snapped up. I'm sure they have made so much money that they can afford to accept a $500 per ticket profit instead of $1000.

You are right about deterrence, but if 10,000 tickets are sold by brokers for $500 less profit per ticket, that's an additional $5 million to be shared by people who actually make theatre.

A price hike isn't so much about deterrence as it is getting in on the action. If people are willing to pay $1000, why should only resellers be benefitting from that demand?
