First Wives Club started this thread, but it's worth repeating (that photo is priceless--whoever is on the left really looks like she's trying hard but doesn't want to be there...) I didn't see Saturday Night listed here yet.

BRAINCHILD (1974) Despite the fact that the poster says Ambassador Theater, the show closed in Philadelphia. Tovah Feldshuh had the leading role. Supposedly the set was environmental in that it started at the entrance of the theater, filling the walls of the house, and on to the stage.

COLETTE Mentioned earlier in this thread. Many felt the show was good. Love the Hilary Knight poster artwork.

DADDY GOODNESS (1979) closed in Philadelphia (I think) after opening in Washington. This show was Freda Payne's consolation prize for losing the leading lady role in DOCTOR JAZZ to Lola Falana.

HARMONY (2003) Also mentioned previously in this thread. Shut down in during rehearsals in Philadelphia due to lack of funding.

I think the woman on the far left in the First Wives Club photo is Barbara Walsh.

Remember this one??? Randy Quaid and his wife almost hit Broadway with unbearable force! They were aiming for the Belasco. LONE STAR LOVE (2007) closed in Seattle. The show that got Mr. Quaid banned from Equity for life!

NEFERTITI closed in Chicago in 1977. A very dull score as I recall.

PAPER MOON (1996). I think this show had more than one pre-Broadway mounting.

PLEASURES AND PALACES (1965) Famous Bob Fosse flop. Read all about it in Ken Mandelbaum's "Not Since Carrie."

THE AMAZING ADELE (1955). Opened in Philadelphia. Closed in Boston. Who's the female star? Dagmar or Tammy Grimes?

TURN TO THE RIGHT (1981). This got some of the worst reviews I've ever read. Even though Buddy Ebsen is featured in the credits twice, I don't see him listed as the top-billed star, which I'm almost certain he was. Closed in Beverly Hills, haha!

Oh I want to know more about Brainchild! I am a Michel Legrand junkie even in his worst stages, and never knew he worked with Hal David...

"Most of these musicals never had an intention of going to Broadway."

Are we only talking about musicals that tried to get to Broadway and failed?

If so, that might explain why in four pages no one's mentioned New York's longest running musical, let alone the world's: THE FANTASTICKS.

Is the COLETTE with Diana Rigg the same COLETTE that John Dankworth wrote for his wife, Cleo Laine? It played for a while in London with Cleo. I have the old LP and some of the songs are qhite good, IMO. In a long-ago interview, Cleo described how they produced it on a budget and had one person--Kenneth Nelson?--playing a number of roles.

Des McAnuff incredible visual soulful version of THE WIZ that played down at La Jolla Playhouse a few years ago. It was incredible.

Casey Nicholaw's ROBIN & THE SEVEN HOODS from Old Globe a few years ago...It was good, entertaining.. Will Chase and Eric Schnider were great and production design was fantastic...The book def needed some work but there were two amazing bringing the house down numbers

MINSKY's that played at The Ahmason a few years ago was also entertaining

Re: Harmony and Egghumor's post showing the pre-Broadway Philly production that stopped in rehearsals because of money shortages.... That was actually the second attempt and the second failure...

I recall going to a Bway Workshop for the show a few years ago, where a THIRD production team was trying to bring it Broadway... that never found a theater and fell apart, too, so Manilow's dream project has been attempted 3 times, I believe.

Senator Joe. I believe it was loading into the theater when all hell broke loose. Adele Holtzer went to prison over that one.
