The next revival of Hello Dolly cast

If word that many options to portray Dolly in its last broadway run being vetoed by Jerry Herman. Im wondering now who would be cast in the show. If a revival was to take place in the future. Personally I think the latest revival was closed before its time. So lets give it within five years.

Personally, I had hoped Dolly Parton would step in the role but Id imagine shed be getting too old to carry a show even in 5 years.

Id love to see Reba take on the role or queen Latifah, I think Olivia Newton John would play a wonderful interpretation though much less brash as some. And two other interesting choices for me would be Emma Thompson and Lisa Kudrow (I really think she could act sing her way through it. Plus the comedic timing she is perfect for. I would pay to see her approach to those moments of earnest.).

Also Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald And Patti Lupone for me would be great. I love that Dolly is a star vehicle and is open to so many interpretations.

I'd be thrilled if Carolee Carmello brings the tour to New York for a limited run. I saw all three Dolly's in the last revival, yet would go again if this were to come true. It wouldn't be the first time that a tour came to New York after the original run had closed.

I'd be thrilled if Carolee Carmello brings the tour to New York for a limited run. I saw all three Dolly's in the last revival, yet would go again if this were to come true. It wouldn't be the first time that a tour came to New York after the original run had closed. 

The tour is closing early, and flopped.

Am seeing the National Tour in Philly next month. Have tickets for 4 consecutive performances.

I would love if the tour made another stop on broadway.

Honestly I don’t know hope it could have flopped. I found it to be such a gorgeous revival and a tribute to the big musicals of yesteryear

Curious...I seem to recall that you are married...does your wife share your devotion to Hello Dolly or does she stay home??

That’s too bad. I truly enjoyed it twice on Broadway (Bette, Bernadette) and once on tour (Carolee). It remains both one of my highlights of my Broadway experiences as well as one of my favorite touring experiences.

Agree. Saw it in Austin earlier this week and thought it was one of the strongest national tours I have seen in years.

It was a tremendous touring production. Likely though, we won’t receive a revival for awhile.

I’m saving my money for the inevitable Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick production in 10-15 years

Edit: Who am I thinking? Laura is too young. Give me Toni Collette is this timeline. Laura can do the revival after that one.

This leg of the tour did close early, but I would assume that it must have done well enough in its first season to justify not only keeping it out on the road but also keeping it on an Equity contract. They could have easily closed it back in August when Betty Buckley’s contract was up instead of extending it with Carolee. I’d be curious just how close they were to recouping at that point.

The sad thing about Hello Dolly is it feels like they won’t do it unless if they have a huge name. There’s definitely many actresses who could give great performances as Dolly, but aren’t big enough stars to be cast in the role on Broadway.

That's what it takes today so that they can recoup in six weeks.

But that really held true of the original production as well. Merrick kept a line of well-known and established stars going into the title role. The show has always been a star vehicle.
