There are to many GREAT songs to pick from but if I HAD to pick one, it would have to be "Music of the Night". I'll never forget the first time I heard it and still the one for me.
Hmm...Yes, "One" is a good one. How about "Lullaby of Broadway". I know people are sick of it, but it is the ultimate Broadway song. It discusses the magic of Broadway- the music and lyrics are classic. I would definitely put that one on the list. Perhaps my number one choice would be "42nd Street", probably for the same reasons. BUt my top 5 would be 1)42nd Street 2)There's No Business LIke Show Business 3)Lullaby of Broadway 4) The Impossible Dream 5) This Is The Moment
And although recent, "Gimme Gimme" defines Broadway showstopper.

This song is so wonderfully constructed. It tells you everything about this character and sums up the central theme of the show in one of the most moving and beautiful songs Sondheim has ever written. It is also one of the most bittersweet songs ever written by anyone. I am moved every time I hear it.
"All That Jazz" ~Chicago. I love that both the lyrics and music could stand on their own yet you'd still get the same message. The combination is even more powerful. It's perfect for the show, the character, the time period, and it's an incredible way to get the audience into it.
"I'm The Greatest Star" ~Funny Girl. Just the sheer determination in that song. Plus a lot of that song is what I really love about certain performers. She knows what she's got, she knows how to use it, and she knows exactly where she deserves to be, and sucks to be you if you're going to turn down the opportunity to get her there.
"World, Take Me Back" ~Hello, Dolly. I just love this song. I love Jerry Herman, and I adore this song. It's so take-charge and really just shows how sometimes, you have to live for yourself. I love that line, "From now on I stand with today in my hand". Great, great song.
Albin, I wondered where you were. I thought, "If Albin doesn't list something from TWGM, I'll be shocked!" No list would be complete without "I Am What I Am."

Wow I can't pick one, because I haven't seen every show, so from the shows I've seen, here's my list.
"Don't Rain on My Parade" - FUNNY GIRL "There's No Business Like Show Buisness" - ANNIE GET YOUR GUN "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" - GYPSY "Rose's Turn" - GYPSY "Gimme Gimme" - THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE "The Impossible Dream" - MAN OF LA MANCHA "Hello, Dolly!" - HELLO, DOLLY! "I'm the Greatest Star" - FUNNY GIRL "Move On" - SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Wow I can't think of anymore...I'll come back when I get some inspiration.
(I know I messed up it's supposed to be the ONE GREATEST show tune of all time but I just couldn't pick one! They're all so different and the best in their own ways!)
