I think I'm auditioning for it next month! I was wondering if anyone has done/is familiar with the school edition and how it differs from the original show. I read that it is about 2 hours so I assume that it is close to the original? Also, are verses cut or keys changed at all?

thanks in advance

edit: also, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should sing at the audition? I am a soprano and interested in the role of cosette!

What is this for? Community theatre? Your school?

Do they want you to sing something from the show?

And don't bump a topic when it's ONLY halfway down the page.

jeez, sometimes people can be so touchy!

anyways...its for a professional regional theatre (but being performed by teens obv, for the "youth" slot on the mainstage)
and NO obviously i don't want to sing anything from the show because they don't say to and I think its tacky to do that. also, the song can only be one minute long, but thats not really the issue bc i can cut it.

i need a monologue too, which is unusual since les mis is like...all music haha

well as always, thanks in advance broadway worlders!

Our cast just opened last night with the school edition and had a wonderful review. The main differences are the cuts of some of the songs/verses and changing of the keys in some songs. I saw the national tour and left a little confused, but this kind of breaks down the story easier. I barely notice any differences.

What made me touchy? The fact that I'm trying to help? Or to point out you did an annoying thing so you can learn from your mistakes?
Sometimes, people can be so ignorant. re: les miserables school edition <- I put a smiley face so you REALIZE I was joking somewhat.

Well, quite frankly, I think Aigoo was justified. You have got to give more information about what you have to do in order to get any sensible help.

I would say to watch out for things like:

The Sound of Music - The Sound of Music
My Favorite Things - The Sound of Music
'Til There Was You - The Music Man

as they tend to be VERY overdone (at least from what I've seen). But there are some WONDERFUL suggestions from that list (isn't it from musicals.net?)!

i've done the school edition and its about 30 minutes shorter than the original version, perhaps a little bit longer. There are some songs that were shortened, for instance "Little Fall of rain", the wedding song, etc. I remember Javert's solo "Stars" was cut short, as well as a few other songs. Although i really like the script because they give you all sorts of notes in it in terms of stage directions, suggested props, directors notes. I really thought they did a good job with revising it. Although the company i worked with didnt let anyone have the sheet music which made it difficult to just sing along to a CD!! Yea but other than that you'll enjoy this version, its not all that different.

YEs a lot of it was cut.

Are you auditioning for a certain role?

And the original show is 3 hours....cut about 15-30 mins overtime....so the school edition is a lot shorter.

I was surprised with how much they kept...but was sad at how much they cut.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

That is interesting bwaybaby18... I think it's cool that you fell in love with the musical. I used to love the musical. Basically the main reason why I hate the musical now is because my director unfairly gave the lead parts out. And this has nothing to do with me... I wouldn't be so selfish as to the reason why I would hate the musical now, but someone I know very well was perfect for the part of Cosette. Beautiful, the right age, Soprano I, and she made all-state chorus. Instead my director gave the part to a girl who didn't even do county chorus, alto I, and a complete suck up after deeming the girl I know "too tall", but everyone knows that it was based on race. It ruined the musical for me, and now my director tip-toes around me because I am one of the few he has left in the music department with anything left... not to sound snobby, but there are only 5 people returning for chamber singers... and 1 alto. You do the math. I hate the director now and the show because the experience itself ruined the show for me.

I commend you if you actually read that, but above is the reason why I dislike the show now... kangaroo

The real reason why my direcotr didn't cast my friend as Cosette is because of her race. She was Asian, and Fantine would have been white... so he chose the white girl instead because he claimed it was more believable. I don't understand that, because Lea Salonga played Eponine, and she was the daughter of the Thenardiers. We have barely any diversity in our music department, especially when it comes to our musicals. I am the ONLY person onstage (now that my friend is leaving) to be of a different race. Welcome to my school...

Okay...your director is an ass........ Our Cosette was tall and white.....our eponine was really short..... and our Fantine was the only Black girl in the show
