What are musicals that have closed on the way to Broadway, since 1990?
I have brainstormed and thought of a few...
Lone Star Love
Mambo Kings...

Can you name some?

Not sure if this counts...

But FACE VALUE (The David Henry Hwang play) closed in previews and never officially opened.

Does that count?

The Christina Applegate revival of Sweet Charity scrapped Broadway plans, but then went forward with them again, so that kind of counts, no?

Unless I'm mistaken, 1491 closed on the way to Broadway in 1969, Pleasures and Palaces in 1965, and Prettybelle in the early 70's (1971 maybe? same season as Follies). And One Night Stand made it to Broadway. Were there further plans made for these shows in the 90's that I don't know about? Revised versions?

I was specifically thinking of musicals, because I was curious about what the list would comprise of, after re- reading all of the "Closed Out Of Town" entries in Not Since Carrie, which ends in 1991. But Face Value is an interesting play...

So:
Lone Star Love
Mambo Kings
Annie 2 (Strouse)
Marty (Strouse)
Bounce (Sondheim)
The Great Ostrovsky (Coleman)
Home again, Home again (Coleman) -- when was this, though?
Arthur - the muscial
The Opposite Of Sex
Harold And Maude
Skin Of Our Teeth

More?

Oops. Yes, you're right about the dates. Though I must say, according to ibdb.com One Night Stand never officially opened on Broadway. It stopped playing the previews I suspect.

Home again, Home again is from 1978 I think, his show between Thwentieth Century and Barnum.

Edit: so it doesn't count in here either re: Shows That Closed On The Way To Broadway, 1990- present

Interesting shows though, whatever the dates...

And you're right about One Night Stand closing in previews on Broadway. I should've specified that I literally meant shows that closed on the road.

Wasn't Stage Door Charley" looking to hit Broadway? And Dr. Dolittle? Saw them both. Both were not that great.

Oh, let's not forget
Kander&Ebb's The Visit and (even though it never went beyond a workshop until now)
The Night they raided Minsky's (Strouse, Birkenhead)

PLUS:
You never know (Strouse, 2005)
Like Jazz (Coleman, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, had two small runs, 2001 and 2004 I think and was in the talks for Broadway when Coleman died)

Edit:
... and of course Coleman's musical "Grace" that ran in Amsterdam 2001 and was heavily in talks for Broadway by then

I wish they had done another attempt of producing this lovely score since 1990, Mr. Roxy, I wish they had.

But I'm pretty sure they didn't re: Shows That Closed On The Way To Broadway, 1990- present

I think BARE: A Pop Opera closed just before it was about to go on Broadway. Anyone else heard about this?

Actually, Busker Alley aka Stage Door Charley is to hit Broadway next season if I recall it correctly featuring Jim Dale

If it only...
oh no, we're not gonna turn this thread into another Cry Baby debate again re: Shows That Closed On The Way To Broadway, 1990- present

And as it comes to my mind:

Whistle down the Wind was on its way, as was The Witches of Eastwick.

And you're right about Martin Guerre and Bare

BARE was moving to off-Broadway, not Broadway.

Fame was also moving to off-bway, which it did.

taz, from what I understand SISTER ACT is on its way to B'way ... not the other way around.

Well, that's a matter of interpretation. Let's say it was on its way to Broadway before and didn't turn up yet (the same could be said of many of these shows that had been named).

And right now, as I understand it, Sister Act is on its way to a Westend production, not a Broadway one yet, I'm afraid.
