I love this thread too.

Come on, gotta show some love for John Napier's set for Les Mis. The beams barely supporting the crumbling society the show takes place in. The intricate cobblestone design of the deck--haphazard and uncertain. The scattered windows, lighting up randomly. It's brilliant.

I want to add in here Tim Hatley's designs for 2002's "Private LIves". It was gorgeous - the opening deco hotel (which looked like it came right out of an Astaire/Rogers film) to that FABULOUS Paris apartment. I still have dreams of living in that apartment! (With Alan Rickman of course).

I looked and looked and wasn't able to find any really decent pictures to post. Maybe someone has one they can add for me?

Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorites. It looks so simple, but at the same time there are these little touches that make it complex.

Can someone who saw the Secret Garden explain the original design concept? I am in love with that show, and I would love to know how the original set looked. Also, does anyone have any pictures?

Secret Garden was gorgeous. The concept was a victorian paper theatre. The sets were mostly very traditional framed by a stunning proscenium arch. I think I know where there are some images, so if I can find them, I'll post them.

Also, I heard there was a turntable in the show. How was that used?

Photos are from Wietske van Tongeren's website. She is the Elisabeth in both photos when she got her big break as a last-minute understudy in the role. She went on to play the role full time in a German production, and is now the acclaimed lead in Vienna's Rebecca.

Cyrano de Bergerac
Scenic Design: Tom Pye
Direction: David Leveaux

I feel like this was the most underappreciated design of the 2007-2008 Broadway. Well, the same goes for Kevin Kline's performance. Can't wait for the DVD in a few weeks!

These pictures (courtesy of The New York Times) don't give the design justice.

I will mention that I have yet to see a photograph from the Vienna production of Elisabeth that does the design justice. There is the DVD of the 2005 Vienna cast, and it gives you a great look of how the design works. There are fantastic clips on that site...search for Elisabeth Wien 2005.

RNT's The Women of Troy
RNT's Present Laughter

They were both brilliant designs and the fact that they were switched every other day was incredible.
