Screen Actors Guild Awards 48th Annual Life Achievement Award:
MARY TYLER MOORE
I LOVE Mary Tyler Moore and after seeing her tonight, I am really concerned about her health. I like Betty White too but she so did not deserve to win for that stupid show "Hot in Cleveland". Yay for Jessica Lange! I remember when she did King Kong and she was panned so much by the critics who said she would never work again.

I don't really think Alec Baldwin deserved to win this year. I'm glad 'Modern Family' won Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress in a Film.
Mary Tyler Moore has had diabetes for years, as you may know - she downplayed it in that recent NY Times article and apparently she's in good health, so hopefully your worries are unfounded supportivemom.
Very happy that Jean Dujardin won. And Plummer's and Spencer's Oscars are all but guaranteed now. I'm interested to see who wins Actress, since that seems to be the most unpredictable category going into the Oscars.
I'm pretty sure they keep giving Betty White awards just to see what she'll say when she gets on stage. Both Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara were more deserving, I think.
Baldwin has won for 30 ROCK every year since the show began. He's never not great, but this particular year I think Ty Burrell was more deserving. I still have no idea why SAG doesn't make a distinction between leading/featured for TV when they do for film.
Thanks Jay! Yes, I have known she has had diabetes for years but she still looked a little more frail tonight. My husband came in during her speech and asked if she had dementia. I told him that's a bit too much but he said she looks like she doesn't know what's going on. I also saw the picture of her in the wheelchair last week. I guess it has been a while since I've seen her in public and wow, Sutton Foster looks so much like the young MTM.
After seeing "The Artist," I'm pulling for Dujardin to get the Oscar.
I would actually vote for it for everything, including Bejo for Supporting Actress.
I really hope it sweeps.
I saw The Artist again today, for the third time, and I loved it even more than I imagined I could. It really is a special film.
I, too, would vote for Bejo. And I really hope the film's amazing score wins.
So happy for Viola Davis. I'll be ecstatic if she wins the Oscar.
I think she's going to.
And AC, I think the score will definitely win, despite a slight backlash due to the use of the Vertigo music during a key scene. They actually used five non-original cues in the score for The Artist. But the vast majority of it was original, and the Academy ruled it eligible for the award. I would definitely vote for it. And if there were an award for best orchestrations, this would surely win. I haven't heard film music sound like that since the '40s and '50s. They just don't arrange or perform the music that way anymore. It was as "old school" as you could ever hope to get.
Before seeing the death reel, I hadn't realized William Duell had died recently.
I was really surprised by Novak's letter, especially given that A Single Man appropriated the same musical phrase in a much more exploitative way just two years ago. That notwithstanding, it's one of the most perfect film scores I've ever heard.
I'm really happy for Davis. It's her time, and she deserves it.
I was just watching her recently in some dull Tom Selleck murder thing (where she was totally wasted), and am so happy that she has seen her screen career rise to a point where she will hopefully not have to slum it in such trash again.
Martin Scorsese. {drink}
I thought the use in of Hermannn in The Artist was not exploitative. Take for instance the use of Vertigo in American Horror Story. Even serving as a referential show to horror films and tropes that felt a bit too much and try-hard.
I still think McCarthy has a shot beating Spencer but I would say Davis, Dujardin, and Plummer are locks.
I think it will be Dujardin, Davis, Plummer, and Spencer.
But anything is possible, as they say.
Please can someone tell me- is it pronounced Scor- say-zee of Scor-sez-ee. I hear it different every time! Thanks! (oh- and I guess that counts for 2 drinks)
I was also quite alarmed at the state of Mary Tyler Moore's health. Whether it's the diabetes or something else, it was clear she's not doing well. She was already standing at the podium when they introduced her, besides her seeming to be a little foggy.
Aww, that's sad. She's always been so vibrant and perky.
supportivemom---I think it's the latter, or so I've been told.
Mom-MTM's eyesight has already been affected by the diabetes and she recently had surgery to remove a meningioma.
I didn't see MTM seated at a table, too. Hope she's as well as can be!
To whom would one write in order to have a moratorium on nominations for Betty White? We get it. She's old, she's cute, and she can still work blue. God bless. The other actresses in her category shoud receive awards for not rolling their eyes when Betty's name was announced. And I like Betty White.
I like Betty's first comment at the podium to accept: "I don't think any of you can read."
The ceremony was generally predictable, even most of the surprises (except for Jean Dujardin's delightful win) were surprises only because of how predictable they were--ie Alec Baldwin and Betty White winning.
I was rooting for Meryl Streep (she gave my second favorite lead actress performance after the strangely snubbed Charlize Theron) but it's hard to complain about Viola Davis winning any acting prize. Davis clearly cemented her status as the frontrunner of the lead actress race, and there's no stopping her now. The standing ovation made this clear, and even Streep herself campaigned for Davis when she won the Globe (and famously when she won the SAG herself for DOUBT).
At this point, the only interesting race is lead actor, George Clooney was considered the frontrunner, at GoldDerby every single "expert" had him as their number one choice for the win so Dujardin's victory was exciting and possibly a gamechanger. Part of me thinks that THE DESCENDANTS keeps losing buzz and THE ARTIST is going to win Picture, so it makes sense to me that they'd wanna give it an acting prize; plus, Dujardin really makes the movie, it's an incredibly impressive star turn and it'd be wonderful to see him take the award home.
There's no doubt in my mind at this point that Dujardin will win. I don't even think Clooney factors in at this point.
To me, the interesting race is leading actress. I think Meryl could still pull it out. This seems like her most real chance to win in a long time. I think Viola is still the favorite, but it will be a photo finish.
