I've heard and read that a diabetic person should avoid any kind of diet soda. One person told me that it's worse than sugared soda. As there's hardly any calories in a Diet Coke, I can't understand why it might be harmful to me.
Does snyone know WHY diet soda is bad for a diabetic person?
Diet drinks have a lot of sodium which isn't good for blood pressure. Don't think diet drinks raise your blood sugars but the salt and water retention isn't good for the side effects of diabetes such as cardiovascular and kidney disease. mom P.S. Your new avatar is so cute!

That's interesting. One of my best friend's is severely diabetic, and only drinks diet soda. I'll have to ask him if he knows anything about it.
That's definitely interesting. My ex-boyfriend is diabetic and was always drinking diet soda.
Yeah- I've never heard that a diabetic has to avoid diet drinks- just need to drink in moderation. Anyone who drinks diet drinks should do so in moderation. I've also heard of people who when they gave up drinking diet sodas, they lost weight. mom
Some of the "fake" sugars in diet drinks actually fool your body into thinking it's sugar. No calories, but it can raise your blood sugar. I think, in moderation it should be alright.
Water is still your best bet.
I am soo addicted with Splenda . I put like 10 packets in my coffee and I am addicted to coffee as well.

Well, doesn't diet soda have aspertame? And from what I know, it's not good for you. Well, then again, soda in general isn't good for you but, yeah, you get my drift.

I had read at one point that the chemical in diet drinks causes the body to crave carbohydrates. I don't know if that's true, but over consumption of carbs would mess up the blood sugar.
Artificial sweeteners do allegedly increase your sugar cravings because they are so intensely and artificially sweet. And Splenda, although "made from" sugar, is no safer than aspartame or the other non-natural substitutes.
I am sure a DOCTOR would know the answer
But sometimes the patient has to know the question.
Msot diet sodas and foods not only have too much splenda, which in itself is way overused by diabetics but also do have too much sodium.
With some creative experimenting you can come up with alternative drinks:
low sodium seltzer w/ fresh lemon/lime or a dash of pure vanilla (tough to get use to but it's a winner once you do) or fresh fruit juices (pineapple, apple, sugar free cranberry or grape etc.) Be sure to mix them 3 parts seltzer to 1 part fruit/fruit juice. It's much less splenda or sugar content.
A good type 2 Diabetic recipe book will give you many great drink ideas as well as low carb/fat/sugar foods. It's a healthy way to live!

Diet soda is crap, but I don't see how it can be "worse" for a diabetic than regular soda, which should be totally off limits. There have been studies done saying that people who drink diet soda are at risk of gaining weight, which, of course, can make diabetes worse. Elphaba is right, of course. You really should consult your doctor.

I have a doctor's appointment next week and I'll surely ask him.
However, I've been wondering why my blood sugar is UP when I'm exercising, dieting (I've lost 35 lbs) amd taking my medications. It was my auto mechanic who first told me about the perils of diet soda. Yesterday I read about it in a publication called "Outsmart Diabetes". When it comes to drinks, the magazine warns against whole milk, regular and diet soda, sweetened iced teas and lemonade, fruit drinks and fruit juice, diet iced teas and diet lemonade. I go along with everything except the diet soda. No one can tell me WHY.
Maybe my doctor will have the answer I'm looking for.

Tackling onset type 2 diabetes later in life is always a struggle as your metabolism drastically changes. What works for some does not work for other. Other meds or medical conditions can also affect your blood sugars. There's so much to learn.
A good diabetic dietician can also help. They will work with you as an individual to control your blood sugars on an ongoing basis until you understand what is triggering the flux in your blood levels and adjust your eating and lifestyle habits.

My brother is diabetic. He just recently got out of the hospital after having a severe infection in his foot and came very close to having the foot and lower part of his leg amputated. One of the problems was that he listened anecdotal and inaccurate information from people who meant well but had no medical background.
What you can and cannot eat and how foods and beverages effect you, can be different for different people. I've never heard anything about diet soda and my brother has been told that he can drink it but, it's possible that for some people, it can be an issue. Ask your doctor and get a refreal to a nutritionist who specializes in diabetic nutrition.

Thanks for all your help. However, the more I read about this, the more contradictory everything becomes. I'm hoping my physician has answers for me.
