Posted: 9/28/09 at 10:42amI read this thread and wanted to see how bad it was so I just watched it. I guess I had zero expectations because I actually kinda liked it. It's no great piece of art and I don't know where the show can possibly go if it had a life, but for a pilot episode, I've seen a whole lot worse. Cox to me is just a fun person to watch. There's just something about her that makes me want to smile and laugh.

Jordan Catalano i agree
It just seemed like a very fun pilot, it wont run for years but it deserves to have some kind of life. Cox does have that thing about her, i dont know what it is.

I skeptically watched the rebroadcast on Friday night and thought it was hysterical. I had no expectations whatsoever that I would enjoy it but I did. I found the supporting characters to be very funny.

Posted: 9/28/09 at 2:02pmI can't hold Ms. Cox's acting or anybody in the cast for that matter in too much contempt...what the hell else are you going to do with material like this except sell it to the max? Very much a tasteless show about middle aged women created and written by tasteless men.

Posted: 9/29/09 at 7:00pmNo, it's terrible. I really like her generally, but I found the first episode literally unwatchable after the first 15 minutes.

Posted: 9/29/09 at 7:32pmI'm with Musk. I tried to watch it, wanted to like it but just ended up turning it off after the first 15 min. I thought it was painfully unfunny and that it had incredibly predictable humor. And I don't know if it was me but I thought they tried to make Cox look like Mary-Louise Parker in WEEDS, and it just didn't happen.

I posted this in a different thread already but it's relative to the topic. Regardless of what some of you may think of this show it appears to be a hit.

Posted: 9/30/09 at 11:07amAgain. The fact that Cougar Town was not able to maintain the numbers Modern Family was able to bring to ABC is generally a cause for concern in these matters. Over a million people who watched Modern Family changed the station when Cougar Town came on.

According to the press release in that link which comes directly from ABC:
"Exhibiting impressive compatibility for ABC in the time slot, ABC's "Cougar Town" debuted with 100% retention of its "Modern Family" lead-in among Adults 18-49 (4.3/11) to finish tied as Wednesday's top-rated show."

MODERN FAMILY is a fantasti comedy (at least judging from the pilot) and it's impressive that they had such an outstanding pilot which is rare for a comedy since I always feel comedies take some time to find the right timing, humor style, etc.
COUGAR TOWN was a bit of a mess, IMO, perhaps it'll get better and it's good that it has an audience, but unless I hear more positive reviews on the show, I probably won't be tuning in again.

Honestly, I had the exact opposite thing with Modern Family, I was way more excited about MF than Cougar Town, and I was so let down by it. Well, Sofia Vergara was awful in it, obviously she was hired only based on her looks for that role. I get annoyed by that blonde woman acting like some sort of victim because she CHOSE to have children. If you want to have children, it will be hard work, everyone knows that.
I also have realized that I get equally annoyed by straight AND gay families. I don't discriminate, I just dislike family shows altogether. That's why I enjoyed SEx and the City, because I don't have to deal with families and children!
Anyways, I do wish the best for Modern Family too.

Sweetie, it's a sitcom, not the Real Housewives of Ad Nauseum. I also think you seriously misread the plot line.
And that ABC press release is a complete lie. 100% retention? Cougar was down 1.1 million viewers in the overnights.

How can you rate the success of a show from its premiere? Of course millions watched CT (pun intended). They had just watched Modern Family and stuck around to see what CT was like, on the same channel.
Now let's see how many people continue to watch. That's what counts.

The significance, such as it is, to me was that 1.1 million people DIDN'T stick around for Cougar Town. Which is odd, because there really was no place else to go. But those folks didn't care to try it out. Maybe they don't think Ms Cox has that 'something.' But if the show continues to shed Modern Family viewers, it will not bode well.
I mighta believed the ABC press release if they'd said it retained 99.99% of the viewers. But they overreached.

Variety says Modern Familty was the critical favorite but that Cougar Town was the top rated comedy.
""Modern Family" was followed by Courteney Cox starrer "Cougar Town" (4.4/11, 11.28m), which built on "Family" by 5% in 18-49 to become television's top-rated new comedy since ABC's "Samantha Who" two years ago.
In a good sign, "Modern Family" held fairly steady in 18-49 on the quarter hour (4.3 at 9 p.m. and 4.2 at 9:15 p.m.), while "Cougar Town" was a flat 4.4 in both half-hours and grew slightly in some other categories."

Honestly, I was expecting to be let down by this 2nd episode, since the 1st one was so hilarious. Well, I was wrong, it was equally hilarious. And yes, this is a rally stupid show, I admit it, but very funny. It makes me laugh, that's why I watch it.
I wonder if I contribute to its ratings because I always tivo it. I never watch the show live I mean...

Posted: 10/1/09 at 12:03amI am not ashamed to admit I love Courteney Cox. I thought she was underrated on Friends. I also like the guy who plays the foxy neighbor. I just don't get the show. I don't find it all that misogynst. I just don't find it all that funny.
