AMERICAN IDOL
re: AMERICAN IDOL#275
Posted: 2/12/09 at 8:05amI'm really liking Jackie Tohn (from NY). She looks/sounds like a combination of Sheryl Crow and Amy Winehouse.

Last night's AI was 'reality' TV at its worst. While it allowed for discussions regarding who's in and who's out, the staged 'sing offs' were absurd. It was an obvious ploy, particulary when they ended with the welder and the oil rigger, and decided to keep both.
Also, they'll have no one to blame but themselves if either Tatiana and/or Nick turns into this year's Sanjaya.

Tatiana and Nick are only in there for ratings. It makes me so mad!
I'm sad about Joanna but it's understandable. Poor girl can't get a break.

Posted: 2/12/09 at 9:32amI really hate that Tatiana and "Norman" made it through when so many more qualified performers didn't. The judges' fake-outs when delivering the news has just gotten so irritating and predictable. And why does Nathan wear rubber bands on his head? Does he just not know they are there? The rest of his look aside (please!), at least get rid of those ridiculous rubber bands.

I actually think that "Norman" can sing...but we havent seen what he can do.
I assume Tatiana got through on her voice as well. Clearly the judges are annoyed by both of these two. I think America will take care of getting rid of both.
Anyone who is watching thinking it's completely fair and that there arent some who are cast rather than advanced on talent couldnt have watched the show before. It's the same every year. I think the biggest mistake (there for someone who was "cast") is that rubber band man. He stinks.
And to be TOTALLY unPC, I think the blind guy stinks too.

^but what makes me so mad is that it WASN'T that way last year. Last year, for the FIRST time, they did a really good job at cutting all the BS and keeping it almost completely to the talent!
I mean, sure, there were a few people who maybe weren't that great, but not a single contestant in the top 24 last year- that I can remember- was put through purely for entertainment value.
And because of that, it ended up being MY personal favorite season ever :)
So it's so frustrating to watch them going BACK to all this BS and screwing it all up again, when they'd finally gotten PAST all of that. It's like they took 2 steps foward and now they've taken 5 steps back. And it makes it very maddening to watch since I appreciate the REAL talent that comes from the show, not the crazies put there for entertainment.

But I think that's exactly what they want, madbrian.

Exactly, Jane.
I'd rather hear Tatiana and Norman sing than the kid with the rubber bands or the blind guy.

The kid who loves drama and crying...and piercing himself.
They showed his back story last night...his mom is a drug addict and he's had to live with various relatives growing up, and his grandma loves him.

doodle, it might be unPC, but that doesn't make it untrue.
He's an adequate singer. An adequate piano player. He reminds me of Anthony what's-his-face, the guy with the severe breathing problems or whatever who ended up in The Fantasticks. His compelling back story will propel him about halfway through the competition, but probably no further.

Anthony Federov was Pavorati compared to this guy, imo. Blind guy's intonation was terrible when he was singing that Daughtry song. It was painful.
Federov had had a tracheotomy when he was a kid...but it didnt affect him in the competition. He had a rather strong voice, though little personality.
I'd compare blind guy to Carmen Rasmussen...never should've been there in the first place.

Yeah, at first I was like "Yay! He's singing Daughtry!" and then a few notes into it I was like, meh. I'd much rather hear Chris singing it.
I don't think he sucks, I just don't think he's that great. I think this year because they are picking a top 36 they let some in that would have never made it had it been a top 24.
Nathan is annoying as crap. And I thought he was wearing headbands, but either way he's ridiculous.

Vote for the worst already has them ranked. Tatiana of course is the top, followed closely by the goofy Elton John knockoff, the untalented male Kate Smith wannabe and rubber band guy (they actually have Adam Lambert ranked pretty highly, too).
Their least favorite is dead wife guy.
(sorry! i don't bother learning names until the top 12 -- gotta preserve that brain space)

That was priceless, my husband and I got a good laugh out of that. It was worth keeping both Nathaniel and Tatiana on for another week. As far as Nick/Norman goes it will be interesting to see if he can sing a serious song.

I just have to defend Anthony Federov for a minute here because he was actually a MILLION times better than this Scott guy :) He wasn't the GREATEST of that season, which is why he didn't win, but I was very impressed with him when I saw him in the Idol concert (seasons 4 and 7 were the only Idol concerts I've been to). His voice is reaaally pretty and spot on pitch. Scott is kind of terrible.

VFTW has a youtube video of Nathaniel Marshall in Into the Woods performing Agony.
He's definitely a better singer than an actor.
