AMERICAN IDOL

Ricky not getting picked makes me hate this show right now. It makes no sense whatsoever...he outsang everyone else, including anoop and the "bluesy" guy, who were second and third, with Von fourth. Both women who were put through were just casting, as everyone has said.

It said so much when Simon compared that guy to Taylor Hicks, and the audience booed and took that as an insult! This is the same Taylor Hicks who WON the damn thing a few years ago, and everybody couldn't get enough of him then!
Wow, the fickle-ness of it all.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#778
Posted: 3/6/09 at 11:47amI thought I saw a mug shot of Jesse after her DUI arrest. I wonder if that kept her out? She was different and a better singer than Megan in my opinion. I, too, believe this decision was made before they even started the show last night. Last night was just a technicality.

Taylor Hicks was a joke and should never have won. If it wasn't for his loony Soul Patrol crazies, he would have been out before the top 10.
In my opinion, of course.

Stockard, your opinion is dead-on. In a season with incredible performers like Chris Daughtry, Kat McPhee, and my personal favorite, Elliott Yamin, how that hack won is beyond me.
I haven't gotten into the show yet this season...I usually wait til the top 10 before I invest my time into it.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#781
Posted: 3/6/09 at 1:17pmI can never remember half of their names until then.....LOL!
re: AMERICAN IDOL#782
Posted: 3/6/09 at 1:21pmSo who will get the coveted final performance next week? One of the three favorites (Danny, Adam, Lil) or one of the judges' choices who'll need it (Megan, Jasmine)? Don't be surprised if it's the latter.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#783
Posted: 3/6/09 at 1:34pmYeah, they may save the pimp spot for the faves until later in the season.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#784
Posted: 3/6/09 at 2:15pmI also think Taylor Hack was a huge joke.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#786
Posted: 3/6/09 at 6:47pmOk, does that weird little corkscrew dance move of Megan's bother anyone else? What the hell is that?
re: AMERICAN IDOL#787

re: AMERICAN IDOL#788
Posted: 3/6/09 at 8:55pmWho do you all think will be the sacrifice this year? You know there is always one really great singer who gets voted off at the wrong time (like Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry...). Then they just say you gotta vote! Personally, I don't think the votes really mean that much. We never get to see the breakdown and so I never trust them! I know I'm a cynic but after this many years, it seems more manipulative. Also see that they all get to move into one house like they did on the first couple of seasons. Oh- and I'm still waiting for the nicknames of the fans- get crackin' everyone!

mom, I agree with you. They never show hard numbers for the votes, so they could just be choosing who goes on and who goes home, and we'd never know.
I'm a Kris Allen fan. Not sure what to call that!
re: AMERICAN IDOL#790
Posted: 3/7/09 at 8:30amAh yes, mom. The "Shock Elimination". I think it's gonna be Gokey!
re: AMERICAN IDOL#791

To talk 'shock eliminations', we must include Tamyra Gray, who was cut before Nikki and Justin in season one. Unfortunately, I think Adam may be the victim of this season's shock.
As for the voting, I think it's legit. I think the producers are so able to promote certain singers that they don't need to fiddle with the voting.

So here's my thoughts on the whole voting thing:
I definitely DON'T doubt that if the producers really want a certain person to go home or a certain person to stay, they would fix it a bit so that happens.
But over all I actually think the results DO tend to come from the actual voting numbers.
First off, there's DialIdol (for those who don't know, DialIdol is a program thing that predicts the results by the amount of busy signals each contestant gets on a given night). It's geeenerally pretty right on. It's harder to tell when the votes are really close, but if one person is clearly way further ahead than everyone else, that person generally DOES seem to be the one who goes through on the show. So yeah, if the show was really THAT fixed, I feel like DialIdol would be a lot less consistently correct.
Second, why WOULD they want to fix the results on a regular basis? The whole point of the show is that people are voting for the people they would plan to go out and support once there is music to buy. It would be completely silly for them to push someone on us who people aren't ACTUALLY voting for, because then no one would go out and buy their CD! We are the very people who are supporting the Idol machine,so it only makes sense to LISTEN to us about who we actually want through, you know?
That said, again, I totally believe that if and when they DO want to fix the results, they can do that. And I'd be willing to bet that's the key to a consistent pattern of at least one shock elimination per year. But I'm just saying that on the WHOLE, I think it's definitely a pretty honest system, simply because the producers would get nothing out of it NOT being honest :)

I think this season may be the last for idol, unless the top 12 pull off something we haven't seen yet. I have been quite bored so far. Topping last season was going to be hard, but the judges and producers didn't seem to make much effort to improve it or even come close. The wild card round was a waste, I agree with everyone who said they knew who was going through before hand. Ricky should have made it, but I knew when they announced the wild card picks he wouldn't get through. They didn't even talk to him after they called his name, he went right to the couch.
As for rigging the votes/who gets kicked off debate; the producers definitely play a role in this. I don't think they mess with it every week or with the final 2 votes. It is apparently in the contract that the producers do have the final say. A contestant from last year said the producers do give certain contestants one free pass. Apparently last year Syesha would have been out week 1 vs David H. I think the producers definitely make decisions to try to keep certain demographics watching. They also must have the big shocker each year- (Tamrya, Chris Daughtry, Michael Johns). I think this year will sadly be Adam. I hope his performances and popularity shine through so they can't let him go. If Danny doesn't develop/show more of a personality he may be the one to go first. We will all have to wait and see how the next couple of weeks play out.
Does anyone know the theme for next week?

Why fix what isn't broken? Sounds like the show still pulls in huge ratings, so I'm not sure the producers are inspired to change anything. I don't think there would be any reason to end Idol unless Simon decides not to return. The singing bits are just decorative. Simon is the star and cruelty is still in fashion.

Posted: 3/9/09 at 4:27pmSo any guesses on the Michael Jackson theme this week? And how they will handle the phone numbers since they don't have 13 numbers..

There were some spoiler "hints" given somewhere (I'm not sure where they came from originally) but one of my friends said over at the worst site these were the predictions based on those:
Kris is singing to all his fangirls. P.Y.T.
Adam is good - and you know it! Bad
Alexis is not ready to bid farewell. Never Can Say Goodbye
Anoop’s doing this one for the ladies. Human Nature or I Just Can't Stop Loving You
Megan is a little wistful. Remember The Time
Jorge wants to give you a special feeling. The Way You Make Me Feel
Scott sees the benefit of we. We Are The World
Jasmine is contemplating some deep issues. Heal The World
Michael wants to assure you that he’ll be around. I'll Be There
Allison may be a girly girl, but she’s got that spark! Dirty Diana
Matt is taking a long, hard look at his musical identity. Man In The Mirror
Some of these seem farfetched, but some sound like they might be accurate.

Interesting...I feel like anyone singing "Man in the Mirror" would be a bad idea one week after Kris. And I could die happy if someone, anyone sang Dirty Diana!
I could definitely see some of the others happening though.

We Are the World? Really???
Unless Scott's going to pull a Steven Brinberg and do each line as a different person (Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, etc.) that is one dull song to do as a solo act.

Yeah, Calvin that's one of the ones I was thinking is a bit of a reach.
I was hoping Adam would do Dirty Diana.
Oh and I also heard a rumor that Danny might be doing Billie Jean, which would be the biggest bonehead move in AI history after Cookie's performance last season.
