What was the Roanoke Colony?

Wow, I didn't know that.
The Roanoke Colony is the one that disappeared without a trace. It was in Virginia. I think it was the first colony there. The people on the ships left for more supplies and when they came back, all that was left was a picec of wood with the word Croatan carved into it. Something like that.

Elphie--your answer re: Roanoke was PERFECT.
The Whiskey RING was a bunch of liquor tax-collectors who defrauded the Government of duly collected liquor tax revenue--it was during the 1870s.

Right. The "Lend-Lease" Arrangement was an Agreement whereby the U.K. could purchase war materials on a "credit" type situation. This agreement was put into effect BEFORE we entered World War II--so MANY protested that FDR was "Neutral"--BUT he was aiding the British--all at the same time.

Although it was pretty obvious that Tilden (the Democratic Cndidate) had won the disputed 1876 Presidential Election, the major part of the agreement that was negotiated between the two Parties stated that if the Democrats "allowed" Hayes (the Republican) ALL Military Troops would be removed from the former Confederacy.

I guess that's a technical question.
Washington WAS a war hereo--but he didn't have to campaign to get elected.
The first candidate to campaign as a "war hero" to win the Presidency was Andrew Jackson--the "hero of the Battle of New Orleans".
Which President inspired the saying "O.K."?
