Sometimes non-banal threads get jacked for private nonsensical conversation, and that bothers me more than seeing an already-banal thread become even more banal.
In light of that, if the banal and non-banal were going to coexist harmoniously, there needs to be some etiquette on the part of both groups - knowing which threads to stay away from and which ones to contribute to.
yes, it's rare to see ANY thread not get jacked and turn banal. I mean, I'm all for banal, but at the right time and place. I hate when I'm in the middle of having or reading a meltdown, and someone in a good mood has the nerve to end it!

Haha, Jane.
The reason I think that the serious discussion threads never exceed a few pages is because people don't like to read that much. You feel like you have to read everything that's been written so far. Blech. When you know the thread is banal. You can jump in anywhere because the topics never last.
So what exactly are you judging the teens who aren't annoying on? Spelling and grammar or quality or both?

Tiff wrote, "Sometimes non-banal threads get jacked for private nonsensical conversation, and that bothers me more than seeing an already-banal thread become even more banal...." Me too. Although it was funny to watch the worst offender trying to figure out which side to play in this thread, and then call herself a bitch.
The problem with the "just avoid the type of threads that bother you" point is that the stupid/banal threads sometimes outnumber the threads that adults might enjoy on a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. And the problem with that is that the grown-up topics get shoved off page one in favor of hairy toe threads, Dame odes to Rath, and Rath public private conversations.
And that MAY be why many of the people who are grown up have drifted away. Although Papa as CotD seems to have brought some of them back among the living.
That's true, TB. I'm not blaming people for having dead serious threads; I'm just saying that, like Jane said, there's a time and place for everything, and frankly, no one here really cares about anyone but themselves - so no, I do not care what you eat for breakfast or what shampoo Sondheim uses. Especially when we're discussing, say, abortion or Iraq.
Time and place. That's all I care about.
Sally, you are not annoying. (well, that comment was, in general you are great).
The title was changed so not to judge all teens, just obnoxious, stupid people.

Hah. Yes. But obnoxious, stupid people don't know they're obnoxious and stupid, do they? I could annoy the hell out of all of you and never know it. Frightening, really.
How many threads are listed on a page, I don't know, I'll count them later. But my point is, I find myself reading and participating in maybe three or four on a given day. I can understand why some adults have left.

I'm scared that if they add an adult thread, all the over 18 year olds will migrate over there and ditch the OT board. Then we'll be alone and it will be no fun.
I am a relatively short-timer on this board - compared to many battle-weary veterans.
But, even in the time I have been here, I find that the level of discourse has declined.
We all get silly and stupid, but some on this board seem to only be silly and stupid.
And, I think that this whole thread was generated by the antics of a few specific posters.
Maybe it is an act, or maybe it is who these people really are, but it becomes tiresome very quickly.
There are plenty of thoughtful, articulate posters who are in their teens. But, it is like anything, the more vocal, outrageous members of your age group are the ones that get all of the negative attention.
But it will be fun because then anyone who wants to be banal, can! Nothing's stopping the adults from continuing to come to the OT board. And then we can talk about ankle socks and how super-hard calculus is to our hearts' content!
(To be realistic, I think an adult board would probably see a lack of banal threads - I would bet that the vast majority of those are started by tweens/teens - but threadjacking is done by people of all ages.)

As one of the weary old timers, and an very early lobbyist for the Student Board, I can't tell you how many times these circular arguments have gone around and around.
I feel liotte's pain, because I too was decried as an ageist and horrible and a meany peany for suggesting a student board.
Here's the thing, if somebody starts a thread title that says "no obnoxious stupid annoying teens" why ON EARTH do there have to be four or five pages of people asking, "You don't mean me, right, do you?" Not everything is for everybody. If the accusation doesn't apply to you, you should just shut up about it instead of wasting the space to proclaim that YOU are DIFFERENT from the generalization.

*squint* I agree with...the last paragraph. And the part about these arguments going 'round and 'round and weee...

It's scary because I literally just sent that exact same sentiment to Jane2 via PM.
The more one protests they're not "like that", the more they're proving that, well, they are.

Namo, can you say ANYTHING positive? (Sorry that was supposed to come right after the post before tiff's...)
If an adult board was started and I was over 18, I'd ditch this board. But I'm not, and I can't. So, basically, if I were an adult, I'd be all for an adult only board.
But, a lot of people I've formed bonds with on this board are over 18. If all of them left, I'd probably leave too. It wouldn't be fun anymore. I can have converstaions with teens any day I want. To have a conversation with an adult who will take me seriously is refreshing. It's one of the things I love about this place.

Namo, can you say ANYTHING positive?::
Apparently I can, given that other posters agreed with what I wrote. Can you read for comprehension?

I only asked if I was among the obnoxious ONLY because I would've been mortified if I had been. The original accusation was more or less that all the teens on this board were obnoxious (obviously that wasn't the intention as it has been narrowed down to just a few specific posters) and no teens were allowed. Well, of course things like that are going to hurt people and they are going to rethink what they've posted in the past and are going to want to know if they are being obnoxious.

I personally agreed 100% with Namo's statement. He hit it right on the nose.
On the flip side, you can't argue that: a) the teenagers offer insightful threads; along with: b) if the adults leave, the OT board will become boring because they won't want to come back. If a) is true, then b) won't be true - the adults will continue to check in on the OT board if there's truly a topic or person they find is worth checking up on.

i'm sorry, due to the posts on this thread it has been decreed that all of the teens, even the sane ones who contribute and raise the level of discourse on the board, must be killed. we've sent the reavers to dispatch your sorry a**es to the scrap heap of failed posters. hide. run. fear.
