Because that'sa HYSTERICALLY clever and original angle to take (the soap press has long said that that's exactly what happened and started the decline of soaps, though I see it as kinda a scape goat.)

And wow, so Ryan Murphy isn't the show runner of this? Of course he still and Falchuk are still taking created by and exec producer credit, but...

I guess the writers of Problem Child 1 and 2 were a better fit with Murphy's 1000 other projects. (To be fair they seem to have made an industry of wacky biopics--I enjoyed Ed Wood, at least when I saw it in theatres as a 14 year old, but that was a "hoot" that rather affectionately riffed on a b movie film maker--not a killer...)

When will someone sit Ryan Murphy and his disciplines down and explain to them that you can't just "make" camp?

One reason may be because, though obviously extremely thinly veiled, they did change the names, etc, for To Die For (I think they even publicly at the time avoided interviews going on about what it was based on and how they found the original story a hoot.)

I'll suggest that the stars lined up perfectly in the State of CA vs Simpson trial to maximize media coverage. First and foremost, it was a CA murder trial in which the accused was an A-list star. Make no mistake about it, OJ was a college and pro football standout in every sense of the word who translated his success on the field into a lucrative career as a product endorser, sports commentator, and occasional actor in widely-released feature films.

While the interracial aspect didn't faze Los Angelenos, it played out in the worst way imaginable outside that bubble.

I witnessed the publishing of the verdict alongside colleagues at a satellite office in rural PA. One woman rolled her eyes at me afterwards and said, "that's alright, the boys will take care of that n...". She and I never repaired our working relationship after that incident. That was not an isolated incident according to family and friends.

Prosecutor Marcia Clark and co-counsel Chris Darden revealed their interracial fling after the trial which set tongues wagging once more in the Bible Belt about the integrity of the prosecution team, the easy virtues of women from LAX and the dark-skinned men who prey on them.

Worst still, misogyny reared its ugly head during the trial. OJ's sympathizers in blogs and in some MSM outlets slut-shamed the deceased Nicole Brown Simpson at every turn. Her sex life & party habits with OJ, other pro ballers, and Ron Goldman became grist for the defense's mill as well the court of public opinion. Arguably, LAPD detective Marc Fuhrman was very easily portrayed as a racist due to his past actions and antics. And OJ bought the best defense counsel his money could buy.

I'm not going to recap the entire trial or events surrounding it but will emphasize that it was a big money trial still regarded by many as the trial of the century. It was the first murder case to my recollection that made media darlings out of criminal defense attorneys and former prosecutors. Star Jones, Greta Van Susteren, and Gloria Allred owe a great dept of gratitude to that circus/trial. Gloria would go on to become the go-to attorney for any victim seeking a book deal and brand development post-trial. See her profile at the jump.
