Honestly, it's been my opinion that Katharine seems a lot more stiff and serious on the stage than she does off. Normally when they show her in a casual moment (namely with the weekly guests) she comes off much more playful and fun but when she's on the show she seems fairly stern most of the time.
"This is show biz, folks! If you think some of your favorite performers aren't phony you're sadly mistaken."
Under that ridiculous assumption, you are saying that every person with talent who tries out for that show must somehow automatically take on some kind of false persona JUST because it's Hollywood. Are most of the people there phony? Yeah. But not everyone is. Now, I'm not saying that Katharine is walking around speaking her mind freely, but nobody on the show is, so how is that even a count against her?
As far as the idiotic comment from the NY Post about how she acts when she knows the camera is on her and when it's not...you have a great knack for misinterpreting what's more like worry and maybe some insecurity as "scowling." And if she was THAT two-faced, I don't see why she would have said anything back to Paula Tuesday.
It's AMAZING how everyone thinks they know these people well enough to judge.
"But, for me, she just doesn't seem to get the concept of practice "
What? She's had more "practice" and training than anyone else on that show. Besides is it difficult for you comprehend that maybe her comments back to the judges came from her feeling that she felt she reasonably well during that performance but the judges were harsh, while other times when she may have been satisfied with her own work, they've praised away? Honestly, I think she's right...they HAVE been particularly harsh on HER. They're holding her up to the standard of her initial audition and criticizing her for not getting to that level every week, but even so she's still doing better than the other contestants anyway. What's wrong with her comments? In fact, when one of the judges points out that somethign about her performance was off, she--before any of the other contestants--is the first one to agree and take the criticism with grace.

I honestly believe that half of the time Kat's expressions are made out of her confusion from contradictory comments made by the Three Faces of Eve judges panel. Randy doesn't know a Dawg from a Kat, Paula is high and Simon just likes to be contrary most of the time. I'd make faces too.
Yeah. For God's sake, Simon told Katharine "I really think that was one of your best performances" one week, and ten seconds later said "Did I say that was your best? I meant your worst." I don't even know what they're talking about when they critique her. And Paula, who has given the most ridiculously hyperbolic praise to some of the worst performances I think I've ever seen on television is being ridiculously harsh on Katharine.
I agree SOMMS & BG107. Any good singer knows when they're off....Katherine always agreed with the judges when she knew they were right. There were times though that they told her she had pitch problems and she knew she didn't, as did most of us watching and so why shouldn't she look confused by those comments. Simon even apologized one week because when he went back to the tape he realized he was wrong. This girl has the whole package that an American idol should have. I don't get what people have against her.
It's AMAZING how everyone thinks they know these people well enough to judge.
What? She's had more "practice" and training than anyone else on that show.
Because you know her well enough to know that she's had more practice?
Maybe she has. But my point was that even if she thinks she did great, the judges may not agree with her. Therefore, she shouldn't make weird faces at them just because she thinks she did better than they thought. It's not very classy. Katharine is good, but I'm not digging her little moments where she seems a little arrogant.
See? This is truly just a case of opinion. Because to me, Taylor seems the arrogant one. Watch his reactions when the judges criticize...he scowls, rolls his eyes, etc.
And on a fun note, I love Katharine and Elliott dancing around like goofs during Taylor's performance...soooo cute.
"Because you know her well enough to know that she's had more practice? "
No, I only know that because she's been having vocal training since a very young age as she said, and she went to Boston Conservatory for more training, while most of the others are not trained. So...yeah. (Not saying that the best-trained should be the winner, but her training and manner lead me to believe she DOES get the concept of constructive criticism and practice)
Like others have said, I really think the faces she makes when the judges are talking to her are more "OH, wow...that's weird. I thought I did better than that." And like I said, I'm right there with her. There have been times when I think they've praised her for performances that were not as good as some performances they've ripped her apart for.
newgirl, I agree. I've always thought Chris and Taylor were the ones who were a little "Yeah, like you know what you're talking about" when the judges criticize them. Granted, sometimes they don't, lol, but I wouldn't be acting that way as they're talking to me.

I agree with the fact that Kat gets criticized more than Elliott, Chris, and Taylor. They have been much harder on her the past few weeks. On Tuesday for example, I didn't see what was wrong with her final performance, and they bashed her for it. And she does agree when she performs poorly, so she doesn't act like she's amazing all the time.
And I've gotta say some things about her "Over the Rainbow" b/c of the comments I've heard about it:
1. First of all, I thought it was absolutely beautiful. That is the first time I've almost cried watching the show. I thought it was great.
2. Also, the one major issue about having to sing that song is the fact that it's Judy Garland. People have been used to that version for almost 70 years, so she will automatically be compared to Judy and said to not be nearly as good.
3. I think it was a lose/lose situation with the arrangement and style. If she changed it too much, people would have said it was bad b/c she changed it too much and didn't stay true to Judy's rendition. (I heard this comment quite a few times).
On the other hand, If she had sung it just like Judy had, people would bash her for not doing anything original, just singing a carbon copy of a song and artist whose greatness can never be matched.
Now, before I get bashed (I know it's coming), I am obviously a HUGE fan of hers. But I also admit it when she sings poorly. I think sometimes people are unfair to her, this past week b/c she sang a song that everyone in the English speaking world knows (2 songs actually, since I Belive I Can Fly is also so well known). And the judges have been harsher on her, but what is odd is that they constantly praise Taylor just b/c he dances around like an idiot. They bash her when she does fine, but praise mediocrity just b/c that person has more stage presence. I agree with those who have said the judges (Randy and Paula anyway) did not want her in the finals. Their comments the past few weeks have shown that.
Ok, I'm done. Sorry for the length. *steps off soapbox*
i applaud you broadwaygirl107 and everyone else that has defended kat. i have lost patience with people on other boards with these typhon waves of hate. if you dont like her singing, fine. but enough with the name calling and 'personality' issues people have. its a singing competition, not ms.congeniality!
on to a lighter subject-that commercial! oh man! lol
oh and yankeesfan. i wholeheartedley agree with the lose/lose comment. :/ i get so frustrated by the sabotage of the penis year campaign :x
Yes, but as we all know from Simon...It's not just a singing competition. But I understand your point-of-view. And it's not just Kat-haters. People are making fun of the way Elliot looks, Taylor's spastic dancing, Chris' lack of personality, etc. The others have been called names, too.
I'll watch it. One of them will really have to blow me away tonight for me to bother voting.

I lost interest when Chris was voted out. If I didn't despise Katherine so much, I wouldn't give a rat's ass who won. But I'm voting for Taylor (multiple times) regardless of how he performs tonight. In fact, I may not even watch the show. It's obviously not about who's the most talented so, at this point, who gives a s#!t? I just don't want the pod to win.
So, you didn't lose interest.

I like Kat. I hope she wins.
It's AMAZING how everyone thinks they know these people well enough to judge.
^^ Actually, the AI producers have put the judging in our hands (with the voting), so evidently the Ai producers think American public does know these people well enough to judge!
In Kat's defense, she does get a bad time from the judges. It used to tick me off when they would get on Kat's case, and then oohhh ahhh over Ace's falsetto. But that's just my opinion. I like Taylor too, but I hope Kat wins.

Actually, they put voting power in the viewers' hands because it makes the competition more exciting for the people watching, which helps the TV's ratings, and it (almost) guarantees that the artist with the highest potential record sales wins. That in no way means that the general public knows these people (they don't), or that they have the minds to choose talent instead of turning this into a popularity contest.

I like Katharine well enough, but I've loved Taylor since the beginning, and that's who I'm rooting for. I'm not sure why, but I just adore the guy.

The totally annoying Taylor is going to win this by a landslide and IMO, primarily because of the YEE-HAW vote. The last couple years, AI has become more like Southern Idol, with the redneck vote controlling the outcome...not unlike a certain election. Too bad Saturday Night Live already had its season finale because even though that show is miserably bad, it would have a wealth of material in this crouching, spastic, cringeworthy "performer".
